महिलाओं के अखंड सौभाग्य का प्रतीक करवा चौथ व्रत की कथा कुछ इस प्रकार है-
एक साहूकार के सात लड़के और एक लड़की थी। एक बार कार्तिक मास की कृष्ण पक्ष की चतुर्थी तिथि को सेठानी सहित उसकी सातों बहुएं और उसकी बेटी ने भी करवा चौथ का व्रत रखा। रात्रि के समय जब साहूकार के सभी लड़के भोजन करने बैठे तो उन्होंने अपनी बहन से भी भोजन कर लेने को कहा। इस पर बहन ने कहा- भाई, अभी चांद नहीं निकला है। चांद के निकलने पर उसे अर्घ्य देकर ही मैं आज भोजन करूंगी।
साहूकार के बेटे अपनी बहन से बहुत प्रेम करते थे, उन्हें अपनी बहन का भूख से व्याकुल चेहरा देख बेहद दुख हुआ। साहूकार के बेटे नगर के बाहर चले गए और वहां एक पेड़ पर चढ़कर अग्नि जला दी। घर वापस आकर उन्होंने अपनी बहन से कहा- देखो बहन, चांद निकल आया है। अब तुम उसे अर्घ्य देकर भोजन ग्रहण करो। साहूकार की बेटी ने अपनी भाभियों से कहा- देखो, चांद निकल आया है, तुम लोग भी अर्घ्य देकर भोजन कर लो। ननद की बात सुनकर भाभियों ने कहा- बहन अभी चांद नहीं निकला है, तुम्हारे भाई धोखे से अग्नि जलाकर उसके प्रकाश को चांद के रूप में तुम्हें दिखा रहे हैं।
साहूकार की बेटी अपनी भाभियों की बात को अनसुनी करते हुए भाइयों द्वारा दिखाए गए चांद को अर्घ्य देकर भोजन कर लेती है। इस प्रकार करवा चौथ का व्रत भंग करने के कारण विघ्नहर्ता भगवान श्री गणेश साहूकार की लड़की पर अप्रसन्न हो गए। गणेश जी की अप्रसन्नता के कारण उस लड़की का पति बीमार पड़ गया और घर में बचा हुआ सारा धन उसकी बीमारी में लग गया।
साहूकार की बेटी को जब अपने किए हुए दोषों का पता लगा तो उसे बहुत पश्चाताप हुआ। उसने गणेश जी से क्षमा प्रार्थना की और फिर से विधि-विधान पूर्वक चतुर्थी का व्रत शुरू कर दिया। उसने उपस्थित सभी लोगों का श्रद्धानुसार आदर किया और तदुपरांत उनसे आशीर्वाद ग्रहण किया।
इस प्रकार उस लड़की की श्रद्धा-भक्ति को देखकर एकदंत भगवान गणेश जी उस पर प्रसन्न हो गए और उसके पति को जीवनदान प्रदान किया। उसे सभी प्रकार के रोगों से मुक्त करके धन, संपत्ति और वैभव से युक्त कर दिया।
कहते हैं कि यदि कोई मनुष्य छल-कपट, अहंकार, लोभ और लालच को त्याग कर श्रद्धा और भक्तिभाव से चतुर्थी का व्रत पूर्ण करता है, तो वह जीवन में सभी प्रकार के दुखों और कष्टों से मुक्त हो जाता है और सुखमय जीवन व्यतीत करता है।
इस कथा में करवा चौथ व्रत के धार्मिक और सांस्कृतिक महत्व का वर्णन है, जो महिलाओं के पति की लंबी आयु, परिवार की समृद्धि और स्वास्थ्य के लिए किया जाता है।
अंधी बूढ़ी मां वाली गणेश जी की कहानी
एक अंधी बुढ़िया हुआ करती थी, जिसके एक बेटा-बहु थे। वह प्रतिदिन भगवान श्रीगणेश का पूजन किया करती थी। बुढ़िया माई की पूजा से खुश होकर एक दिन भगवान श्रीगणेश ने बुढ़िया माई को दर्शन दिए और कहा कि मैं तुम्हारी निस्वार्थ पूजा से बहुत खुश हुआ हूं, जो तुम्हें मांगना है, मांगो। मैं तुम्हारी कामना पूरी करूंगा।
इस पर माई ने कहा कि मुझे तो कुछ मांगना नहीं आता है। ऐसे में गणेश जी ने कहा कि मैं कल फिर से आऊंगा, जब तक तू अपने बेटे-बहु से पूछ ले। ऐसे में बुढ़िया माई अपने बेटे से पूछती है, तो बेटा बोलता है कि माई धन मांग ले, वहीं बहु बोलती है कि पोता मांग ले। बुढ़िया माई बोलती है कि ये तो अपना-अपना देख रहे हैं, ऐसे में वह पड़ोसियों से पूछती है, तो पड़ोसी बोलते हैं कि माई, तेरी कुछ समय की जिंदगी है, तो तू धन और पोते का क्या करेगी। तू एक काम कर, तू अपनी आंखें मांग ले, जिससे बची हुई जिंदगी को आराम से बिता सके।
इस पर बुढ़िया माई बोली कि ऐसा क्या मांगूं, जिससे मेरी इच्छा भी पूरी हो जाए और बेटे-बहु का मन भी न दुखे। अगले दिन भगवान श्रीगणेश प्रकट हुए और बुढ़िया माई से मांगने के लिए कहा।
जिस पर बुढ़िया माई ने कहा कि हे विघ्नहर्ता, अन्नदेवो, धनदेवो, निरोगी काया देवो, अमर सुहाग देवो, दीदा गोढ़ा देवो, सोने के कटोरे में पोते को दूध पीता देखूं, अमर सुहाग देवो और समस्त परिवार सुख देवो और आपके श्रीचरणों में मुझे स्थान देवो।
इस पर गणेश जी ने कहा कि बुढ़िया माई, तूने तो मुझे ठग लिया, तू तो कह रही थी तुझे कुछ मांगना नहीं आता है। मैं तेरी सभी इच्छाएं पूरी करूंगा।
जिस प्रकार भगवान श्रीगणेश ने बुढ़िया माई की इच्छा पूरी की, इसी प्रकार सभी की इच्छाएं पूरी हों और सभी पर भगवान का आशीर्वाद बना रहे।
करवा चौथ पर धोबिन की कहानी
करवा नाम की एक धोबिन हुआ करती थी, जो कि अपने पति के साथ तुंगभद्रा नदी के किनारे रहा करती थी। एक दिन उसका पति नदी में कपड़े धो रहा था, तो इस बीच एक मगरमच्छ आया और उसके पति को मुंह में दबोचकर यमलोक ले जाने लगा। इस बीच करवा ने पुकार सुनी और मगरमच्छ के पास पहुंच उसे घागे से बांध दिया। करवा मगर को लकेर यमराज के पास पहुंची और कहा कि यदि यमराज ने उसके पति को नहीं बचाया, तो वह श्राप देगी। करवा का साहस देखकर यमराज ने मगर को यमलोक दिया और पति को दीर्घायु का वरदान दिया। मान्यता है कि इस दिन के बाद से कार्तिक मास की चतुर्थी तिथि को करवा चौथ मनाया जाता है।
करवा चौथ पूजा विधि
नारद पुराण के अनुसार इस दिन भगवान गणेश की पूजा करनी चाहिए । करवा चौथ की पूजा करने के लिए बालू या सफेद मिट्टी की एक वेदी बनाकर भगवान शिव- देवी पार्वती, स्वामी कार्तिकेय, चंद्रमा एवं गणेशजी को स्थापित कर उनकी विधिपूर्वक पूजा करनी चाहिए ।
पूजा के बाद करवा चौथ की कथा सुननी चाहिए तथा चंद्रमा को अर्घ्य देकर छलनी से अपने पति को देखना चाहिए । पति के हाथों से ही पानी पीकर व्रत खोलना चाहिए । इस प्रकार व्रत को सोलह या बारह वर्षों तक करके उद्यापन कर देना चाहिए ।
चन्द्रोदय समय
पौराणिक मान्यताओं के अनुसार करवा चौथ के दिन शाम के समय चन्द्रमा को अर्घ्य देकर ही व्रत खोला जाता है । इस दिन बिना चन्द्रमा को अर्घ्य दिए व्रत तोड़ना अशुभ माना जाता है ।

Let us immerse ourselves in the sacred narratives of Karwa Chauth Vrat, a cherished tradition symbolizing the unbroken marital bliss of women. Here is the beautiful Katha, along with other inspiring stories and the traditional Puja Vidhi for this auspicious day.
Once, there lived a wealthy merchant who had seven sons and one daughter. On a sacred Chaturthi Tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Kartik, the merchant’s wife, along with her seven daughters-in-law and her own daughter, observed the Karwa Chauth Vrat. In the evening, when all the merchant’s sons sat down for their meal, they invited their sister to join them. The sister gently replied, “Brothers, the moon has not yet appeared. I shall partake in my meal only after offering Arghya to the moon.”
The merchant’s sons loved their sister dearly. Seeing her face pale with hunger, their hearts were filled with sorrow. The sons went outside the city and, climbing a tree, lit a fire. Returning home, they told their sister, “Look, dear sister, the moon has appeared! Now, you may offer Arghya and break your fast.” The merchant’s daughter then joyfully told her sisters-in-law, “See, the moon is out! You too can offer Arghya and have your meal.” Hearing their sister-in-law, the elder sisters-in-law wisely said, “No, sister, the moon has not yet risen. Your brothers are deceiving you by showing you the light of a fire, pretending it is the moon.”
However, the merchant’s daughter, disregarding her sisters-in-law’s words, offered Arghya to the ‘moon’ shown by her brothers and partook in her meal. By thus breaking her Karwa Chauth Vrat prematurely, she incurred the displeasure of Bhagwan Shri Ganesh, the Remover of Obstacles. Due to Ganesh ji’s displeasure, her husband fell gravely ill, and all the remaining wealth in their home was spent on his treatment.
When the merchant’s daughter realized the error of her ways, she was filled with deep remorse. She earnestly prayed to Ganesh ji for forgiveness and, with full devotion, began observing the Chaturthi Vrat again according to all prescribed rituals. She respectfully honored all those present and sought their blessings.
Witnessing the girl’s unwavering faith and devotion, Ekadanta Bhagwan Ganesh ji was pleased with her. He granted her husband a renewed life, freed him from all ailments, and blessed their home with abundant wealth, prosperity, and splendor.
It is said that if any person completes the Chaturthi Vrat with true faith and devotion, abandoning deceit, ego, greed, and avarice, they become free from all sorrows and difficulties in life and experience a joyful existence.
This sacred Katha beautifully illustrates the religious and cultural significance of the Karwa Chauth Vrat, observed by women for the long life of their husbands, and the prosperity and well-being of their families.
Bhagwan Ganesh and the Blind Old Devotee
There once lived a blind old mother who had a son and a daughter-in-law. Every day, she would devotedly perform Puja to Bhagwan Shri Ganesh. Pleased with the old mother’s devotion, one day Bhagwan Shri Ganesh appeared before her and said, “My child, I am very pleased with your selfless worship. Ask for whatever you desire, and I shall fulfill your wishes.”
The old mother replied, “Lord, I do not know what to ask for.” Ganesh ji then said, “I will return tomorrow. Until then, you may consult with your son and daughter-in-law.” So, the old mother asked her son, who suggested, “Mother, ask for wealth.” Her daughter-in-law, in turn, advised, “Ask for a grandson.” The old mother mused, “They are only thinking of themselves.” She then asked her neighbors, who said, “Mother, you have but a few years left in this life. What will you do with wealth and a grandson? Do one thing – ask for your eyesight, so you can live the rest of your life comfortably.”
Hearing this, the old mother pondered, “What should I ask for that would fulfill my own desires and also not displease my son and daughter-in-law?” The next day, Bhagwan Shri Ganesh appeared again and asked the old mother to state her wish.
Thereupon, the old mother prayed, “O Remover of Obstacles! Grant me food, grant me wealth, grant me a healthy body, grant me eternal marital bliss, grant me sight and a grandson (dida godha). Let me see my grandson drinking milk from a golden bowl, grant me eternal marital bliss, grant happiness to my entire family, and grant me a place at your divine feet.”
Hearing this, Ganesh ji smiled and said, “Old mother, you have indeed outwitted me! You said you didn’t know what to ask for. I shall fulfill all your desires.”
Just as Bhagwan Shri Ganesh fulfilled the wishes of the old mother, may He similarly fulfill the desires of all devotees, and may His divine blessings always be upon everyone.
The Washerwoman Karwa’s Devotion on Karwa Chauth
There once lived a washerwoman named Karwa, who resided with her husband on the banks of the Tungabhadra River. One day, while her husband was washing clothes in the river, a crocodile appeared and seized him in its jaws, dragging him towards Yamalok. Hearing his desperate cries, Karwa rushed to the spot and, with immense courage, bound the crocodile with a thread of her devotion. Karwa then dragged the crocodile all the way to Yamaraj’s abode and declared that if Yamaraj did not save her husband, she would curse him. Witnessing Karwa’s extraordinary courage and unwavering devotion, Yamaraj sent the crocodile to Yamalok and bestowed upon her husband the boon of a long life. It is believed that from that day forward, the Chaturthi Tithi of the Kartik month came to be celebrated as Karwa Chauth.
The Sacred Puja Vidhi for Karwa Chauth
As narrated in the Narada Purana, on this day, Bhagwan Ganesh should be worshipped. To perform the Karwa Chauth Puja, one should create an altar (vedi) using sand or white clay, and then establish the divine forms of Bhagwan Shiva, Devi Parvati, Swami Kartikeya, Chandra Dev (the Moon God), and Ganesh ji, performing their Puja with all prescribed rituals.
After the Puja, one should listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha. Thereafter, Arghya should be offered to the moon, and one should gaze upon her husband through a sieve. The Vrat should then be broken by drinking water offered by the husband’s own hands. In this manner, the Vrat should be observed for sixteen or twelve years, followed by its Udyapan (concluding ritual).
Moonrise on Karwa Chauth
According to ancient traditions, on the day of Karwa Chauth, the Vrat is broken only after offering Arghya to Chandra Dev in the evening. It is considered inauspicious to break the fast without offering Arghya to the moon on this sacred day.
