The Shiva Tandava Stotram is a powerful and extraordinary hymn traditionally attributed to Ravana, the King of Lanka. According to the well-known Puranic tradition, the hymn is associated with the occasion when Ravana, overcome by immense strength and pride, attempted to lift the entire Mount Kailash—the sacred abode of Lord Shiva. Seeing this act of arrogance, Lord Shiva pressed the mountain down merely with the toe of His foot, trapping Ravana beneath it and causing him intense pain. In that moment of suffering and helplessness, Ravana’s pride was shattered, and he repeatedly prayed, “Shankara… Shankara…”. His heart then became filled with profound devotion, and he began praising Lord Shiva in his powerful voice. This sacred hymn later became renowned as the Shiva Tandava Stotram.
According to traditional belief, Lord Shankara was pleased by Ravana’s intense devotion and by the musical and metrical beauty of his hymn. He blessed Ravana with fearlessness, knowledge of many sacred disciplines, prosperity and other divine blessings.
Even today, devotees of Lord Shiva recite this Stotram with profound devotion and spiritual energy. According to Hindu religious tradition, its regular recitation is believed to inspire courage, strength, devotion, inner discipline and Vairagya within the devotee.
The regular recitation of this sacred hymn is traditionally regarded as a spiritual Sadhana through which devotees seek courage, inner strength, Bhakti and self-confidence. For devotees of Lord Shiva, the Shiva Tandava Stotram remains a profound expression of surrender and an inspiring means of seeking the compassionate grace of Mahadeva.
May Lord Shiva, from whose sacred matted locks the divine waters of Goddess Ganga flow and purify the world, whose neck is beautifully adorned with a magnificent garland of great serpents, and whose Damaru resounds throughout all directions, bless our lives with auspiciousness, purity and divine consciousness through His majestic Tandava.
May my heart remain absorbed at every moment in Lord Chandrashekhara, upon whose matted locks the lively waves of the Divine Ganga move with extraordinary beauty, whose forehead blazes with sacred fire and whose head is gracefully adorned with the young crescent moon.
Kripa Kataksha Dhorani Niruddha Durdharapadi Kvachid Digambare Mano Vinodametu Vastuni॥3॥
May my mind find eternal joy and refuge in Lord Shiva, the compassionate Digambara, who delights in the divine companionship of Goddess Parvati, the daughter of the King of Mountains, whose consciousness is filled with boundless bliss and whose gracious glance is traditionally revered as capable of removing even the most difficult adversities.
Madandha Sindhura Sphurat Tvaguttariya Medure Mano Vinodamadbhutam Bibhartu Bhuta Bhartari॥4॥
May Lord Bhutanatha fill my mind with wondrous spiritual joy. The jewels shining upon the hoods of the serpents in His matted locks cast a reddish radiance upon the directions, while He majestically wears the hide of a mighty elephant as His garment.
May Lord Shiva, whose sacred feet are covered by the dust of flowers offered by Indra and the other Devas, whose matted locks are bound by the king of serpents and whose head is adorned with the radiant moon, eternally bless our lives with auspiciousness, serenity and divine prosperity.
May the sacred matted locks of Lord Shiva remain a source of divine grace upon us. With the blazing fire of His forehead, He reduced Kamadeva to ashes; even the celestial leaders bow before Him, while the nectar-like crescent moon shines beautifully upon His head.
Karala Bhala Pattika Dhagad Dhagad Dhagajjvalad Dhananjayahutikrita Prachanda Pancha Sayake.
May my devotion remain eternally fixed upon the Three-Eyed Lord Shiva, who offered the powerful Kamadeva into the blazing fire of His fierce forehead and who is poetically praised as the incomparable divine artist adorning Goddess Parvati, the beloved daughter of the Mountain King.
May Lord Shiva, whose throat possesses the mysterious darkness of a moonless night, who wears the majestic hide of an elephant, who bears the Divine Ganga and whose head is adorned with the beautiful crescent moon, bless us with spiritual abundance, serenity and auspiciousness. He is the support and sustainer of the entire universe.
Smarachchhidam Purachchhidam Bhavachchhidam Makhachchhidam Gajachchhidandhakachchhidam Tam Antakachchhidam Bhaje॥9॥
I worship Supreme Lord Shiva, whose blue throat shines with the beauty of blossoming blue lotuses. He is praised as the destroyer of Kamadeva, Tripura, worldly bondage, the prideful Yajna, Gajasura, Andhakasura and even death itself.
Akharva Sarva Mangala Kala Kadamba Manjari Rasa Pravaha Madhuri Vijrimbhana Madhuvratam.
Smarantakam Purantakam Bhavantakam Makhantakam Gajantakandhakantakam Tam Antakantakam Bhaje॥10॥
With unwavering devotion, I worship Lord Shiva, the Supreme Reality who embodies every form of auspiciousness and divine beauty. Though He brings dissolution, that very power preserves the balance of creation. He is simultaneously the destroyer of negativity and the compassionate protector of existence.
Glory to Lord Shiva, the majestic Lord of the Tandava. Fierce fire blazes upon His forehead as serpents move and breathe around His sacred head, while the auspicious rhythm of the Mridanga resounds as “Dhimi-Dhimi” in harmony with His powerful cosmic dance. May that Lord Shiva bring auspiciousness into our lives.
Trinaravinda Chakshushoh Praja Mahi Mahendrayoh Sama Pravrittikah Kada Sadashivam Bhajamyaham॥12॥
When shall I worship Lord Sadashiva with perfect equanimity—the Lord who sees stone and precious jewels alike, a garland of serpents and a necklace of pearls alike, friend and enemy alike, and king and ordinary person alike? He remains impartial, detached and untouched by worldly distinctions.
Kada Nilimpa Nirjhari Nikunja Kotare Vasan Vimukta Durmatih Sada Shirahstham Anjalim Vahan.
Vilola Lochano Lalama Bhala Lagnakah Shiveti Mantram Uchcharan Kada Sukhi Bhavamyaham॥13॥
When shall I experience that blessed state in which I dwell in solitude near the sacred waters of the Divine Ganga, free myself from impure thoughts, remain with folded hands and tear-filled eyes, and continually chant “Shiva… Shiva…” while immersed in the bliss of Mahadeva?
Hare Gurau Subhaktimashu Yati Nanyatha Gatim Vimohanam Hi Dehinam Sushankarasya Chintanam॥14॥
According to the traditional Phalashruti, one who regularly recites, remembers and speaks this supremely sacred hymn progresses towards inner purification and deep devotion to Lord Shiva, the Supreme Guru. Contemplation upon Lord Shankara is praised as a spiritual means of overcoming delusion and worldly attachment.
According to the traditional Phalashruti, a devotee who recites this hymn composed by the ten-headed Ravana at the conclusion of Lord Shiva’s worship during Pradosha is blessed by Lord Shambhu with enduring prosperity and auspicious abundance, symbolically described through chariots, elephants, horses and the gracious presence of Lakshmi.
