Shri Ganesh Chaturthi, also lovingly known as Vinayak Chaturthi or Ganeshotsav, is a significant Hindu festival celebrated to commemorate the divine birth of Bhagwan Ganesh. This sacred festival is observed across India, though it is celebrated with exceptional grandeur and devotion, particularly in Maharashtra and Karnataka. As the Puranas narrate, it was on this auspicious day that Bhagwan Ganesh manifested on Earth. During this holy period, Bhagwan Ganesh is worshipped with immense reverence. The festival is marked by the installation of Ganesh idols in homes for personal devotion and in grand public pandals. Large, beautiful idols of Bhagwan Ganesh are established in prominent locations, and Puja is performed for nine days. Devotees from far and wide come in large numbers to have Darshan. After nine days, the Ganesh idol is immersed in a water body like a pond, river, or ocean, amidst joyful songs and rhythmic beats.
The Sacred Katha of Shri Ganesh Chaturthi
The Shiva Purana, specifically in the fourth (Kumara) section of the Rudrasamhita, narrates this divine story: Before taking her bath, Devi Maa Parvati created a child from the dirt and unguents of her body and appointed him as the guardian of her abode. When Bhagwan Shiva wished to enter, the child respectfully stopped Him. This led to a fierce battle between the Shivaganas and the child, but none could overpower him.
Finally, in a moment of divine anger, Bhagwan Shiva severed the child’s head with His Trishul.
This deeply angered Devi Maa Parvati, and She resolved to bring about the destruction of the worlds. The terrified Devas, on the advice of Narada Muni, offered prayers to Devi Maa Parvati and appeased Her. Following Bhagwan Shiva’s instruction, Bhagwan Vishnu went to the northern direction and brought back the head of the first living being He encountered, which was an elephant. Bhagwan Shiva then placed the elephant’s head upon the child’s body, bringing him back to life. Devi Maa Parvati lovingly embraced this elephant-headed child and blessed him to be the foremost among all Devas.
Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva) declared the child to be Sarvadhyaksha (Lord of all beings) and bestowed upon him the boon of being worshipped first among all deities.
Bhagwan Shiva lovingly declared, “O Girijanandan (son of Girija)! Your name shall be supreme in removing all obstacles. You shall be revered by all and be the chief of all My ganas.”
Shri Ganesh ji was born on the Chaturthi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, and observing a Vrat on this day is believed to remove all obstacles and bestow Siddhis (divine accomplishments). On this day, after performing Puja to Shri Ganesh, the devotee offers Arghya to the moon, presents sweets to Brahmins, and then partakes in a sweet meal themselves.
It is firmly believed that the sincere wishes of those who observe the Shri Ganesh Chaturthi Vrat are unfailingly fulfilled.
