Jivitputrika Vrat, also known as Jitiya or Jiutiya Vrat, is observed by mothers who pray for the long life, good health and well-being of their children. The story of King Jimutavahana associated with this Vrat carries a beautiful message of sacrifice, compassion and the protection of life.
Jivitputrika Vrat Katha
In ancient times, there lived a righteous and compassionate prince named Jimutavahana, born into the lineage of the Gandharvas. He valued the service of his parents and the welfare of living beings far more than royal power and worldly splendour.
After some time, he gave up his attachment to the kingdom and began living in the forest with his parents.
Jimutavahana was deeply compassionate by nature. Whenever he saw any living being in distress, he was always ready to help.
The Grief of the Elderly Naga Mother
One day, while walking through the forest, Jimutavahana heard the sound of a woman weeping near the seashore.
When he went closer, he saw an elderly mother overcome with sorrow and crying bitterly.
Jimutavahana asked her:
“Mother, why are you so distressed? What is the reason for your grief?”
The elderly woman told him that she belonged to the Naga lineage and that her son, Shankhachuda, was to be sent that day as food for Garuda.
She explained that, out of fear of Garuda, the Nagas had accepted an arrangement under which one Naga from their clan would be sent to him as food at an appointed time.
That day, it was her son Shankhachuda’s turn.
The thought of losing her son had left the mother completely heartbroken.
Jimutavahana Makes a Great Resolve
Seeing the elderly mother’s grief, Jimutavahana’s heart was deeply moved.
He decided that if her son’s life could be saved in exchange for his own, he would not hesitate to sacrifice himself.
He said to the mother:
“Mother, today I will go in place of your son. Your son will live.”
The elderly woman was astonished and tried to stop him, but Jimutavahana remained firm in his resolve.
Jimutavahana Sits Upon the Sacrificial Rock
Jimutavahana went to the place where a Naga was left for Garuda as his food.
He sat upon the sacrificial rock himself and waited for Garuda to arrive.
After some time, the sound of enormous wings filled the sky, and Pakshiraj Garuda appeared.
Mistaking Jimutavahana for a Naga, Garuda seized him in his claws.
Garuda began to wound him, but Jimutavahana showed neither fear nor any desire to save his own life.
He remained calm, content in the thought that because of his sacrifice, a mother’s son would remain alive.
Garuda Is Astonished
Seeing Jimutavahana’s extraordinary patience and courage, Garuda was astonished.
He wondered how an ordinary Naga could remain so calm in the face of death.
Just then, Shankhachuda arrived and said to Garuda:
“O Pakshiraj, please release him. He is not a Naga. He is the righteous Jimutavahana, who has offered himself in order to save my life.”
Jimutavahana’s Sacrifice Changes Garuda’s Heart
Hearing this, Garuda was deeply astonished.
He asked Jimutavahana why he had chosen to give up his own life for another being.
Jimutavahana replied:
“If the life of a mother’s son can be saved in exchange for my own, what greater act of virtue could there be for me?”
Moved by Jimutavahana’s compassion, sacrifice and selflessness, Garuda’s heart changed.
He released Jimutavahana and resolved that he would no longer kill the Nagas in this way.
Thus, through Jimutavahana’s sacrifice, Shankhachuda’s life was saved and the Nagas were freed from fear.

The Popular Folk Tale of the Eagle and the Jackal
Along with Jivitputrika Vrat, a popular folk tale about an eagle and a female jackal is especially well known in Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh.
According to local tradition, an eagle and a female jackal were close friends. They saw women observing Jivitputrika Vrat and decided to observe the Vrat themselves.
The eagle followed the Vrat with complete faith and discipline, but the jackal could not bear her hunger and secretly ate food during the night.
According to the folk story, the children of the eagle, who followed the Vrat properly, were blessed with well-being, while the jackal, who broke the rules of the Vrat, suffered sorrow related to her children.
Note: The story of the eagle and the jackal belongs to regional folk tradition, and different versions of it are told in different places.
