Rishi Panchami is a sacred observance in Sanatana Dharma, observed on the Panchami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. This day is considered especially significant for expressing reverence, respect and gratitude towards India’s great Rishi tradition. On this day, the seven revered sages — Maharishi Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadwaja, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni and Vashishtha — are especially worshipped.
In religious tradition, the Rishi Panchami Vrat is associated with self-purification, repentance and seeking forgiveness for mistakes or violations of religious conduct committed knowingly or unknowingly. Devotees observe the fast with discipline, remember the Saptarishis and pray for inspiration to follow the path of Dharma, knowledge and righteous conduct.
Significance of Rishi Panchami
Rishis hold an exalted place in India’s spiritual tradition. The knowledge of the Vedas, Upanishads, philosophy, Dharma Shastras and many spiritual traditions has been passed down from generation to generation through the Rishis. Rishi Panchami provides an opportunity to express gratitude towards these great sages.
The purpose of this Vrat is not merely to follow a religious ritual, but also to reflect upon one’s own conduct. If a person has knowingly or unknowingly committed an improper act, acknowledging it and resolving to follow a life of purity, discipline and Dharma can be considered an important spiritual aspect of this observance.
Who Are the Saptarishis?
The seven sages who are especially worshipped and remembered on Rishi Panchami are:
Maharishi Kashyapa
Maharishi Atri
Maharishi Bharadwaja
Maharishi Vishwamitra
Maharishi Gautama
Maharishi Jamadagni
Maharishi Vashishtha
In many religious traditions, Mata Arundhati is also respectfully remembered and worshipped along with the Saptarishis.
Meaning: Maharishi Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadwaja, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni and Vashishtha — these seven great sages are remembered with reverence.
Rishi Panchami Vrat Katha
According to the Puranic story, in ancient times King Sitashva respectfully asked Lord Brahma, “O Pitamaha! You have told me about many meritorious Vrats. Kindly tell me about a Vrat through which a person may atone for sins and mistakes committed knowingly or unknowingly.”
Lord Brahma said to the king, “O King! The Rishi Panchami Vrat, observed on the Panchami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, is considered highly meritorious. On this day, the Saptarishis should be worshipped with devotion. An ancient story is associated with this Vrat. Listen to it attentively.”
The Family of Brahmin Uttanka in Vidarbha
In ancient times, a righteous and learned Brahmin named Uttanka lived in the kingdom of Vidarbha. His wife’s name was Sushila. Sushila was extremely virtuous and devoted to Dharma. In due course, they were blessed with a son and a daughter.
Uttanka’s son became well-versed in the Vedas and Dharma Shastras. When their daughter reached marriageable age, Uttanka arranged her marriage with a worthy and virtuous young man. Unfortunately, however, her husband passed away after a short period of time.
Uttanka and Sushila were deeply distressed by their daughter’s sorrow. After some time, Uttanka handed over the responsibilities of the household to his son and went to live on the banks of the Ganga with his wife and daughter. There, he devoted his time to austerity, spiritual practice and the study of the Vedas, while also imparting knowledge of Dharma and the Vedas to his disciples.
Their daughter also served her parents and lived a disciplined life.
The Daughter Suffered Great Distress
One night, while Uttanka’s daughter was resting, she suddenly developed an extremely painful condition. The Puranic account describes that her body became afflicted with worms.
When Uttanka’s disciples saw her in this condition, they became frightened. They immediately called her mother, Sushila, and told her what had happened.
Seeing her daughter suffering in this manner, Sushila became extremely distressed. She took her daughter to Uttanka and sorrowfully said, “O Lord! Our daughter has always followed Dharma. What action has she committed that she must endure such suffering?”
Uttanka Discovered the Cause from Her Previous Birth
After hearing his wife’s words, Uttanka meditated upon Lord Narayana and, through his yogic insight, reflected upon the actions of his daughter’s previous birth.
He said, “In her previous birth too, she was born into a Brahmin family. In that life, she neglected certain rules associated with religious conduct and purity. She also witnessed the observance of the Rishi Panchami Vrat but did not show proper reverence towards it.”
Uttanka explained that because she had witnessed the Rishi Panchami Vrat in her previous birth, she received the merit of being born again into a righteous Brahmin family. However, due to her disrespect towards the Vrat and religious rules, she had to experience this suffering.
Hearing this, Sushila asked her husband, “O Lord! What remedy can free our daughter from the consequences of these actions from her previous birth?”
Uttanka Explained the Rishi Panchami Vrat
Uttanka said, “On the Panchami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, one should observe the Rishi Panchami Vrat with devotion and discipline. After bathing, the Saptarishis should be worshipped with a pure heart.”
While remembering Maharishi Kashyapa, Atri, Bharadwaja, Vishwamitra, Gautama, Jamadagni and Vashishtha, devotees should offer them water, sandalwood paste, flowers, incense, lamps, garments, Yajnopavita, fruits and Naivedya.
The devotee should maintain discipline in thought, speech and action throughout the day and seek forgiveness for mistakes committed knowingly or unknowingly. One should listen to the story of the Saptarishis, remember them and resolve to lead a life guided by Dharma.
Her Suffering Was Relieved Through the Rishi Panchami Vrat
Following her father’s instructions, the Brahmin girl observed the Rishi Panchami Vrat with devotion. She worshipped the Saptarishis according to the prescribed tradition and prayed for forgiveness for the actions of her previous birth.
According to the Puranic story, through the meritorious effect of the Rishi Panchami Vrat, she attained atonement for the actions of her previous birth and was freed from her suffering.
Lord Brahma told King Sitashva that a person who worships the Saptarishis on Rishi Panchami with devotion, discipline and a pure heart, and listens reverently to the Vrat Katha, progresses on the path of righteous conduct and Dharma.
