प्रदोष व्रत, a most auspicious Vrat, is observed to receive the divine grace of Bhagwan Shiva and Mata Parvati. This sacred Vrat is performed on the Trayodashi Tithi of both the Krishna Paksha and Shukla Paksha of every month. The evening time, when dusk begins after sunset and night approaches, is known as Pradosh Kaal. It is during this special period that the Puja, Jap (chanting), meditation, and listening to the Katha of Bhagwan Shiva are considered to hold immense significance.
Pradosh Vrat is not merely a fast, but rather a Sankalp (resolve) to purify one’s mind, speech, and actions. On this day, devotees reverently perform Puja to Bhagwan Shiva, chant “Om Namah Shivaya,” and listen to or read the Pradosh Vrat Katha. It is believed that observing Pradosh Vrat alleviates life’s suffering, debts, diseases, fear, poverty, and mental unrest, bestowing happiness, peace, and prosperity through the grace of Bhagwan Shiva.
Understanding Pradosh Vrat
Pradosh Vrat is a Vrat dedicated to the worship of Bhagwan Shiva, observed on the Trayodashi Tithi. This Vrat comes twice every month—once in the Krishna Paksha and once in the Shukla Paksha. During this Vrat, Bhagwan Shiva and Mata Parvati are worshipped in the evening. Devotion to Shiva during Pradosh Kaal is considered especially fruitful, as this time is deemed most auspicious for Shiva Puja, Jap, meditation, and prayers.
During Pradosh Vrat, devotees observe self-restraint throughout the day and in the evening, perform Puja with proper rituals before a Shivling or an idol of Bhagwan Shiva. In this Vrat, special importance is given to purity of mind, truthful speech, non-violence, compassion, forgiveness, celibacy, and refraining from envy and slander.
The Significance of Pradosh Vrat
According to religious belief, Pradosh Vrat is extremely dear to Bhagwan Shiva. Observing this Vrat allows the divine grace of Bhagwan Shiva to flow into the devotee’s life. The Puja performed during Pradosh Kaal is believed to remove human flaws (doshas). This is why it is called “Pradosh.”
The significance of Pradosh Vrat is not limited to material desires alone. This Vrat enhances spiritual peace, mental stability, atonement for sins, auspicious resolve, and a sense of surrender to the Divine. A devotee who observes Pradosh Vrat with faith and discipline experiences an increase in patience, balance, and auspiciousness in their life.
When is Pradosh Vrat Observed?
Pradosh Vrat is observed on the Trayodashi Tithi. The Pradosh Vrat is best observed on the day when the Trayodashi Tithi falls during Pradosh Kaal. Pradosh Kaal is generally the evening time around sunset. For Puja, one should always consult the Panchang of their location to determine the Pradosh Kaal.
If the Trayodashi Tithi spans two days in a month, the decision for the Vrat is made by observing its presence during Pradosh Kaal. Therefore, it is advisable to refer to a Panchang for the correct date and Puja timing.

Pradosh Vrat Katha
According to a Katha described in the Skanda Purana, in ancient times there was a brave, radiant, and deeply devoted king named Satyarath in the land of Vidarbha. He ruled for many years, yet not even for a single day did he allow any interruption in his worship of Bhagwan Shiva.
Once, the king of Shalva, along with several other kings, attacked Vidarbha. A fierce battle continued for seven days. In the end, unfortunately, King Satyarath was defeated. Deeply saddened, he left his kingdom and went away. The enemies entered the city. When the queen came to know of this, she left the royal palace and went into a dense forest. At that time, she was nine months pregnant, and the time of delivery was near.
Suddenly, one day, she gave birth to a son in the forest itself. Leaving the newborn child there for a moment, she went near a lake to drink water because she was thirsty. There, a crocodile swallowed her.
At the same time, a widowed Brahmin woman named Uma was passing by that path, carrying her one-year-old son Shuchivrat in her lap. Seeing the newborn child, whose umbilical cord had not even been cut, she was greatly surprised. She began to think, “If I take this child home, people may raise many doubts about me. But if I leave him here, some wild animal may eat him.”
While she was thinking in this way, Bhagwan Shiva appeared before her and said, “Take this child to your home. He is a prince. Protect him like your own son, and do not reveal this matter before others. By doing so, your fortune will rise.” Saying this, Bhagwan Shiva disappeared. The Brahmin woman named the prince Dharmagupta.
The widow then took both children with her and began searching for the child’s father. While searching, she reached the ashram of Rishi Shandilya. The sage told her, “King Satyarath has passed away. Because he had left the Pradosh Vrat incomplete in his previous birth, he met with such a fate. The queen too had killed her co-wife in a previous birth, and that same soul took birth as a crocodile in this life and took revenge.”
Hearing this, the Brahmin woman placed both children at the feet of the sage. Rishi Shandilya gave them the Shiva Panchakshari Mantra and instructed them to observe Pradosh Vrat. After this, the Brahmin woman left the sage’s ashram and began living in the city of Ekachakra. There, for four months, she worshipped Bhagwan Shiva and observed Pradosh Vrat with devotion.
One day, Shuchivrat found a golden pot filled with gold coins. He brought it home. Seeing this, his mother became extremely happy, and she realized the divine glory of Pradosh Vrat.
One day, both boys were roaming in the forest. There, they saw some Gandharva maidens. The Brahmin boy returned home, but Prince Dharmagupta began speaking with a Gandharva maiden named Anshumati. Anshumati said to Dharmagupta, “I am the daughter of a Gandharva king. Shri Shiv Ji has told my father to marry his daughter to Dharmagupta, the son of King Satyarath.”
Then Dharmagupta said, “I am that same Dharmagupta.” After this, Anshumati invited the prince to meet her father for the marriage. Dharmagupta returned and told his mother everything. The Brahmin woman understood this to be the fruit of Shiva worship and the blessing of Rishi Shandilya. With great joy, the marriage of Dharmagupta and Anshumati was performed. The Gandharva king gave them great wealth, servants, attendants, and property.
After this, Prince Dharmagupta regained control over the kingdom of Vidarbha with the help of the Gandharva army. All this was the result of the Pradosh Vrat observed with faith and devotion by the Brahmin woman and Prince Dharmagupta.
According to the Skanda Purana, the devotee who listens to or reads the Pradosh Vrat Katha with concentration after worshipping Bhagwan Shiva on the day of Pradosh Vrat does not have to face poverty for a hundred births.

The boy humbly replied that he had no money and that his bundle contained only the rotis given by his mother. Seeing his poverty, the thieves let him go. As he went further, he became tired and slept under a tree. At that time, the city guards, who were searching for the thieves, reached there. Mistaking the boy for a thief, they took him before the king. Without hearing the full matter, the king ordered him to be imprisoned.
When the boy did not return home, his mother became extremely worried. The next day was Pradosh Vrat. She observed the Vrat with devotion and prayed to Bhagwan Shiva for the protection of her son.
