Shri Vishalakshi Shaktipeeth, Varanasi: History, Significance, and Darshan

Shri Vishalakshi Shaktipeeth is a deeply revered pilgrimage sanctuary situated near the banks of the holy Ganga in the sacred city of Kashi (Varanasi), the eternal abode of Lord Shiva. This holy Shaktipeeth is located at the historic Mir Ghat, in close proximity to Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple and Manikarnika Ghat. In Sanatana Dharma, Kashi is celebrated as the city of Moksha, where Lord Shiva and Adi Parashakti eternally reside.

Introduction

Vishalakshi Shaktipeeth occupies a preeminent place among the 51 Shaktipeeths of Bharat. Nestled within the sanctified lanes of Mir Ghat in Varanasi, the temple forms a sacred triad of Shakti alongside Maa Meenakshi of Madurai and Maa Kamakshi of Kanchipuram. Devotees who come here experience profound peace, grace, and spiritual elevation.

The story of the Shaktipeeth

According to sacred tradition, when Devi Sati gave up Her mortal body during the sacrificial fire organized by Her father Daksha Prajapati, a grief-stricken Lord Shiva traversed the cosmos holding Her sacred form. To preserve universal balance, Lord Vishnu used His Sudarshana Chakra to divide the sacred form of Devi Sati. The sanctified spots where Her holy limbs and ornaments fell were consecrated as Shaktipeeths.

Sati’s body part or ornament

According to the authoritative text Tantrachudamani, the sacred ear ornament or jewel (Karna-kundala or Mani) of Bhagavati Sati fell at this revered site in Kashi. Because of this, the sacred area is also closely associated with Manikarnika. While some regional traditions interpret the name 'Akshi' as the descent of Her eyes, classical scriptural sources specifically record the falling of Her ear ornament.

The name of the Devi

The name 'Vishalakshi' is formed from two sacred words—'Vishala' and 'Akshi'—meaning the Divine Mother endowed with expansive and compassionate eyes. In the Devi Bhagavata Purana and Matsya Purana, the Goddess is reverently worshipped as Vishalakshi, the presiding Shakti of Kashi. The Kashi Khanda of the Skanda Purana also venerates Her as the fifth Gauri among the sacred 'Nava Gauri' of Kashi.

Bhairava

In keeping with the sacred tradition of each Shaktipeeth, Vishalakshi Shaktipeeth has its protective guardian. According to scriptural and local traditions, Lord Kaal Bhairav, the eternal Kshetrapala of Kashi, is venerated as the Bhairava of this Peetha. A pilgrimage to Kashi and the darshan of Maa Vishalakshi is traditionally undertaken alongside the worship of Lord Kaal Bhairav.

Religious significance

Maa Vishalakshi of Kashi is prominently venerated among the sacred 108 Shaktipeeths enumerated in the Devi Bhagavata Purana. The Kashi Khanda records that Lord Vishweshwara rests near the sanctum of Maa Vishalakshi. Devout worship here purifies the seeker's inner awareness and illuminates the path toward spiritual knowledge and Moksha.

Puja and darshan

Inside the sanctum sanctorum, devotees are blessed with the darshan of two holy forms of Maa Vishalakshi. On the main pedestal stands a majestic, ornate vigraha sculpted from black stone. Right behind it rests a very ancient, small Swayambhu stone murti revered as 'Adi Vishalakshi'. Pilgrims bathe in the sacred Ganga and offer holy water, flowers, incense, lamps, and kumkum in deep devotion.

Major festivals

Vasant (Chaitra) Navratri and Sharadiya Navratri are celebrated here with great reverence and devotion. In addition, the festival of 'Kajali Teej', observed on the Tritiya tithi of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada, is a central celebration at this shrine. On this sacred day, the Goddess is adorned in special shringar, accompanied by traditional night vigils and devotional singing.

History

The present architecture of the Vishalakshi Temple reflects a graceful synthesis of North Indian and South Indian Dravidian traditions. During the 19th and 20th centuries, the Nattukottai Nagarathar (Chettiar) community of Tamil Nadu undertook the major renovation of this shrine and established steady daily worship traditions. The ornate gopuram at the entrance and carvings of Maa Gajalakshmi bear witness to this rich architectural heritage.

How to reach

Vishalakshi Temple is situated at Mir Ghat in Varanasi. Travelers arriving at Varanasi Junction (Cantt) railway station or Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport at Babatpur can take an auto-rickshaw or taxi to Godowlia or Chowk. From Godowlia or Dashashwamedh Ghat, one can reach the temple on foot through the atmospheric lanes of old Kashi. It is located just a short walk from the Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple corridor.

Darshan timings

The temple is generally open for devotees daily from 5:00 AM to 11:30 AM and from 5:00 PM to 9:30 PM. The Mangala Aarti is performed at sunrise, while the Shringar Aarti takes place during the evening twilight. Temple hours are often extended during major festivals and the holy days of Navratri.

Distinctive traditions

According to longstanding tradition, a pilgrimage to Kashi is complete only after receiving the darshan of Shri Kashi Vishwanath, Maa Annapurna, Maa Vishalakshi, and Lord Kaal Bhairav. Devotees visit the shrine offering red chunri and sindoor, praying for spiritual peace and the welfare of their families.

Spiritual message

The wide and compassionate eyes of Maa Vishalakshi symbolize the Divine Mother's eternal grace and maternal care over all living beings. This holy Shaktipeeth reminds seekers that liberation from worldly bonds and realization of the Supreme Truth are attained through Her grace and inner vision.
