Shri Vibhash Shaktipeeth - Maa Bargabhima Temple, Tamralipta (Tamluk)

Shri Vibhash Shaktipeeth is revered among the fifty-one sacred Shaktipeeths of the Sanatana tradition. Situated along the serene banks of the Rupnarayan River in the historic town of Tamluk (ancient Tamralipta), in the Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal, the renowned Maa Bargabhima Temple is venerated as the sanctified Vibhash Shaktipeeth. It is here that a holy limb of Devi Sati sanctified the earth, establishing this shrine as a prominent seat of Shakta sadhana and devoted adoration of Bhagavati.

Introduction

In classical scriptures, this sacred Peetha is remembered as 'Vibhasha' or 'Bhasapeetha'. In contemporary geography, this holy site is identified with the Maa Bargabhima Temple in Tamluk, West Bengal. Historically celebrated as Tamralipta, Tamluk flourished as a renowned maritime port and cultural sanctuary in ancient India. Resting gracefully by the Rupnarayan River, the sanctum of Maa Bargabhima draws pilgrims throughout the year seeking the benign grace of the Divine Mother.

The story of the Shaktipeeth

According to sacred tradition, when Lord Shiva was dishonoured during the grand sacrifice hosted by Prajapati Daksha, Devi Sati gave up Her life in the sacrificial yogic fire. Overwhelmed by grief, Lord Shiva carried Her sacred mortal form and commenced the cosmic Tandava across the universe. To preserve cosmic order, Lord Vishnu released His divine Sudarshana Chakra, dividing Sati’s sacred body into fifty-one holy parts. Each spot where Her divine limbs and sacred adornments descended was transformed into an auspicious Shaktipeeth.

Sati’s body part or ornament

According to the Tantra Chudamani and the Peetha Nirnaya Tantra, the left ankle (Vama Gulpha) of Bhagavati Sati fell in this sanctified realm of Tamralipta. Blessed by the touch of Devi Sati’s left ankle, the soil acquired boundless spiritual sanctity, rendering it an exalted pilgrimage for spiritual seekers and devotees alike.

The name of the Devi

The presiding Divine Mother of Vibhash Shaktipeeth is extolled in sacred texts as Kapalini or Bhimarupa. In local devotion and long-standing living tradition, Bhagavati is lovingly revered as Maa Bargabhima or Bhimakali. Installed in the inner sanctum, the dark stone vigraha of the Mother radiates divine serenity and spiritual splendour, bestowing fearlessness upon all who seek Her shelter.

Bhairava

At every Shaktipeeth, Lord Shiva abides alongside the Divine Mother in the form of Bhairava as Her guardian and protector. The presiding Bhairava of Vibhash Shaktipeeth is Sarvananda. In traditional scriptural verses, He is remembered as an embodiment of Mahadeva. The spiritual pilgrimage to Vibhash Peetha is fulfilled by offering humble prayers to Lord Sarvananda alongside Maa Kapalini.
