श्री नन्दीपुर शक्तिपीठ – माँ नन्दीकेश्वरी मंदिर, सैंथिया (बीरभूम)

Shri Nandipur Shaktipeeth - Maa Nandikeshwari Temple, Sainthia (Birbhum)

Situated along the Mayurakshi river basin in the sacred Birbhum district of West Bengal, Nandipur Shaktipeeth is a profound centre of devotion for Sanatana Dharma seekers. The ancient hamlet of Nandipur is now an integral part of Sainthia town, where the divine abode of Bhagavati Nandikeshwari is reverently known as Nandikeshwari Tala.

Introduction

Located in Sainthia town of Birbhum district, the Nandikeshwari Temple is held among the most revered of the 51 Shaktipeeths. This pilgrimage is worshipped as Nandipur Shaktipeeth, the sacred spot graced by the descent of a divine ornament of Mata Sati.

The story of the Shaktipeeth

According to sacred Puranic tradition, after Mata Sati gave up Her body at the yajna of King Daksha, grief-stricken Lord Shiva wandered the cosmos carrying Her sacred form. To restore balance to creation, Lord Vishnu used the Sudarshana Chakra to divide Sati’s body into sacred parts. It is believed that Her divine necklace descended upon this sanctified ground.

Sati’s body part or ornament

According to classical texts such as Tantrachudamani and Pithanirnaya, the necklace (hara) of Devi Sati fell at Nandipur. The traditional scriptural verse records this holy attribution:

hāra-pāto nandipure bhairavo nandikeśvaraḥ |

nandinī sā mahādevī tatra siddhim-avāpnuyāt ||

The name of the Devi

Here, the Primordial Shakti is venerated in the divine form of Nandini. In regional devotional tradition, She is also lovingly worshipped as Maa Nandikeshwari, reflecting the worship offered to Her by Lord Shiva’s devotee and attendant, Nandi.

Bhairava

The guardian Bhairava of Nandipur Shaktipeeth is enshrined as Nandikeshwara. Pilgrims consider the worship of Bhairava essential alongside receiving darshan of Bhagavati.

Religious significance

This holy Peetha is celebrated as a proven seat for both Tantric sadhana and heartfelt bhakti. In the sanctum sanctorum, instead of an anthropomorphic idol, a natural tortoise-shaped holy rock is enshrined, consecrated with vermilion, three golden eyes, and a silver crown.

Puja and darshan

Devotees worship Bhagavati by offering fresh flowers, naivedya, and vermilion. Every afternoon, a pure sattvic anna-bhog is offered to the Mother, after which sacred prasad is distributed among visiting pilgrims.

Major festivals

Grand religious observances take place during Sharadiya and Chaitra Navratri, Kali Puja, Mahashivratri, and Vaishakhi Purnima. Thousands of devotees gather here on these sacred occasions to receive divine grace.

History

This sacred site has been venerated since ancient times as a holy seat of continuous worship. The present temple structure was built in 1913 (Bengali year 1320). The spacious temple courtyard also houses shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Sri Rama-Janaki, Radha-Govinda, and Hanuman ji.

How to reach

The temple is located just about one kilometre from Sainthia Railway Junction. The nearest major air hub is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. By road, Sainthia is easily accessible via state transport and private vehicles from various major towns of West Bengal.

Darshan timings

The temple remains open for devotees generally from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The sanctum doors remain closed for a brief period in the afternoon during the bhog offering.

Distinctive traditions

An ancient banyan tree stands in the temple courtyard where devotees tie red and yellow sacred threads while praying for their heartfelt wishes. Upon the fulfilment of their prayers, devotees return here to untie the threads and offer sincere gratitude to Maa Nandikeshwari.

Spiritual message

Nandikeshwari Dhama teaches seekers that the supreme nature of Bhagavati transcends transient names and forms, resting in eternal consciousness. Contemplating the vermilion-adorned sacred stone awakens inner serenity, humility, and steadfast bhakti.
