Beloved devotees, we humbly present a profound and sacred narrative that explains the divine origins of Tulsi Maa and the significance of Tulsi Vivah. This revered story, as recounted in our ancient scriptures, illustrates the immense power of true devotion and chastity, and how the divine play of the Lord unfolds to uphold Dharma and cosmic balance.
The Divine Narrative: How Bhagwan Vishnu Broke Devi Vrinda’s Chastity for Jalandhar’s Demise
A Sacred Introduction
The bright fortnight’s eleventh day of Kartik month is known as Devotthan or Devprabodhini Ekadashi. On this auspicious day, Bhagwan Shri Hari awakens from His divine Yoga Nidra, and the sacred tradition of Tulsi Vivah is also observed. Indeed, Tulsi is none other than the embodiment of Sati Vrinda, whose unwavering devotion and chastity were so immense that even the mighty demon king Jalandhar remained unconquerable because of her virtuous strength.
The Divine Narrative Unfolds
In ancient times, Bhagwan Shankar once cast His divine effulgence into the ocean. From this divine energy, a celestial child was born, who later became known as the demon king “Jalandhar.” As he emerged from the ocean, Shri Lakshmi Devi accepted him as her brother. Jalandhar married Vrinda (Vrindavati), the supremely chaste daughter of Kalnemi. Devi Vrinda’s steadfast devotion to her husband was so profound that as long as her chastity remained unbroken, no deity could defeat Jalandhar. In due course, Jalandhar became consumed by arrogance. First, he sought to possess Lakshmiji, but she withdrew, considering him her brother. Then, he harbored the wicked thought of obtaining Mata Parvati and, assuming the form of Bhagwan Shiva, reached Kailash. Devi Parvati immediately recognized his deception and vanished, thereafter narrating the entire incident to Shri Hari Vishnu. Bhagwan Vishnu understood that the true source of Jalandhar’s strength was not his own power, but Devi Vrinda’s unwavering chastity, and thus, it was essential to break it first.
Bhagwan Vishnu, assuming the guise of a sage, arrived at the forest where Vrinda was in solitude. By the Lord’s divine Maya, two fearsome illusory demons appeared there. Vrinda became terrified. The sage-form of Shri Hari instantly annihilated both demons. Vrinda respectfully inquired, “O Sage! My husband, Jalandhar, is battling the deities; please give me some news of him.” Then, Bhagwan, by His Yoga Maya, manifested two monkeys – one holding Jalandhar’s head, and the other, his torso. Seeing her husband’s plight, Vrinda fainted and fell to the ground. Upon regaining consciousness, she implored the sage, “O Great Soul! Please bring my husband back to life.” Bhagwan, through His Maya, rejoined the head and torso, but it was Bhagwan Vishnu Himself who entered that very body.
Vrinda could not discern this subtle divine illusion. She accepted the given body as her husband and acted accordingly. The very moment this occurred, her chastity was broken. Meanwhile, on the battlefield, Bhagwan Shankar slew the real Jalandhar, for he was no longer protected by Vrinda’s sacred vow. When Vrinda realized the entire deception and divine play, she was filled with both rage and sorrow. She spoke to Bhagwan Vishnu, “O Narayana! You have used my devotion and chastity as a means; I curse you – may you become a stone!” Bhagwan accepted the curse and manifested as the Shaligram-Shila. With the Preserver of the creation taking the form of a stone, a great disturbance arose throughout the three worlds (Trilokya).
The Devas approached Vrinda and pleaded, “O Devi! Please free the Lord from this curse.” Vrinda replied, “I will transform the curse, but only its auspicious form shall remain.” Then, she renounced her body through the fire of Yoga (Yoga-agni). From where Vrinda’s body fell, a sacred plant emerged – which later came to be revered by the name “Tulsi.”
Bhagwan Vishnu’s Divine Boon
Bhagwan Vishnu then declared through a divine voice from the heavens (Akashvani), “O Vrinda! Because of your unbroken chastity and devotion, you have become even dearer to Me than Lakshmi.” “From now on, you shall reside eternally by My side as Tulsi.” “Any person who performs your Vivah (marriage) with My Shaligram form will attain auspiciousness in this world and the highest salvation in the next.” It is from this time that the tradition of Tulsi Vivah commenced on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi.
The Glories of Tulsi Maa
In any home where Tulsi resides, the messengers of Yama (Yamadoots) do not approach untimely.
A person who departs from life with Tulsi leaves (Tulsi-dal) and Ganga-jal in their mouth attains Vaikunth Dham.
Shraddha performed under the shade of Tulsi and Amla trees grants liberation (Moksha) to the ancestors (Pitras).
A devotee who performs Tulsi Vivah on Kartik Shukla Ekadashi receives blessings of progeny, good fortune (Saubhagya), fame (Keerti), and unwavering devotion to Vishnu (Vishnu-Bhakti).
Essence of the Sacred Katha
There is no greater shield than devotion (Bhakti) and unwavering chastity (Pativratya).
Bhagwan never allows true Vrat (vows), true love, and true sacrifice to go in vain.
Therefore, Tulsi – who is indeed Vrinda – is considered supremely dear to Vishnu even today.
