Let us immerse ourselves in the sacred narrative of the Somvar Vrat, a tale that beautifully illustrates the boundless compassion of Bhagwan Shiva and Devi Parvati, and the profound rewards of unwavering devotion.
The Sacred Somvar Vrat Katha
In a certain town lived a wealthy merchant (Sahukar). He lacked nothing in terms of material wealth, yet he was deeply sorrowful because he had no children. With a longing for a son, he observed the Somvar Vrat (Monday fast) every week and, with utmost devotion, worshipped Bhagwan Shiva and Devi Parvati in the Shiva temple. Witnessing his unwavering devotion, Maa Parvati was pleased and requested Bhagwan Shiva to fulfill the merchant’s heartfelt wish. Hearing Devi Parvati’s plea, Bhagwan Shiva responded, “O Parvati, in this world, every being reaps the fruits of their actions, and one must experience whatever is destined in their fate.”
However, Devi Parvati, wishing to honor the merchant’s devotion, expressed her desire to fulfill his wish. Responding to Mata Parvati’s earnest request, Bhagwan Shiva granted the merchant the boon of a son, but also stated that the child’s life would only span twelve years.
The merchant was overhearing this divine conversation between Mata Parvati and Bhagwan Shiva. He felt neither joy nor sorrow upon hearing it. He continued to worship Bhagwan Shiva with the same steadfast devotion as before. After some time, a son was born in the merchant’s home. When the boy turned eleven, he was sent to Kashi (Varanasi) for his studies.
The merchant called his son’s maternal uncle, gave him a substantial amount of wealth, and instructed him, “Take this boy to Kashi for his education, and arrange for Yagyas (sacred fire rituals) along the way. Wherever you perform a Yagya, ensure that Brahmins are fed and offered Dakshina (donations) before proceeding.”
The uncle and nephew, performing Yagyas and offering donations to Brahmins in this manner, set off towards Kashi. On their journey, they came across a town where the king’s daughter was to be married. However, the prince she was destined to marry was blind in one eye. To conceal his son’s blindness, the prince’s father devised a plan. Seeing the merchant’s son, an idea struck him. He thought, “Why not make this boy the groom and have him marry the princess? After the wedding, I will give him some wealth and send him away, then take the princess to my own city.”
The boy was dressed in groom’s attire, and his marriage to the princess was solemnized. But the merchant’s son was an honest person. He felt this arrangement was unjust. Seizing an opportunity, he wrote on the corner of the princess’s chunni (scarf), “Your marriage has taken place with me, but the prince with whom you will be sent away is blind in one eye. I am going to Kashi for my studies.”
When the princess read what was written on her chunni, she informed her parents. The king refused to send his daughter off, and so the wedding procession returned. Meanwhile, the merchant’s son and his uncle reached Kashi and performed a Yagya there. The Yagya was performed on the very day the boy turned twelve years old. The boy told his uncle, “I am not feeling well.” The uncle replied, “Go inside and rest.”
As per Bhagwan Shiva’s boon, within moments, the boy’s life breath departed. Seeing his deceased nephew, the uncle began to lament loudly. Coincidentally, at that very moment, Bhagwan Shiva and Mata Parvati were passing by. Devi Parvati said to the Lord, “Prannath (Lord of my life), I cannot bear the sound of his weeping. You must alleviate this person’s suffering.” When Bhagwan Shiva approached the lifeless boy, He said, “This is the son of that very merchant to whom I granted a life of twelve years. Now his lifespan is complete.” But Mata Parvati, overflowing with maternal compassion, pleaded, “O Mahadev, please be gracious and grant this child more years of life, otherwise, his parents will also perish in agony, longing for him.” At Mata Parvati’s earnest request, Bhagwan Shiva bestowed upon the boy the boon of life. By Bhagwan Shiva’s grace, the boy came back to life. After completing his education, the boy and his uncle set off towards their home city. As they traveled, they arrived at the same town where his marriage had taken place. In that town too, they organized a Yagya. The boy’s father-in-law recognized him, welcomed him to the palace with great hospitality, and sent his daughter off with him.
Meanwhile, the merchant and his wife were waiting for their son, enduring hunger and thirst. They had vowed that if they received news of their son’s demise, they too would give up their lives. But upon hearing the news of their son’s return to life, they were overjoyed. That very night, Bhagwan Shiva appeared in the merchant’s dream and said, “O wealthy one, pleased by your observance of the Somvar Vrat and your listening to the Vrat Katha, I have granted your son a long life.”
Whoever observes the Somvar Vrat or listens to and reads this sacred Katha, all their sorrows are dispelled, and all their heartfelt desires are fulfilled.
Somvar Vrat Vidhi: Observing the Sacred Fast
As per the Narada Purana, a person observing the Somvar Vrat should bathe in the morning, offer water to Bhagwan Shiva, and worship Shiva-Gauri. After performing Shiva Puja, one should listen to the Somvar Vrat Katha. Thereafter, one should partake of food only once.
The Somvar Vrat is generally observed until the third ‘pahar’ of the day, which means until evening. There are three types of Somvar Vrat: Prati Somvar Vrat (observing every Monday), Saumya Pradosh Vrat, and Solah Somvar Vrat (observing sixteen Mondays). The method of observance is the same for all these Vrats.
The Divine Blessings of Somvar Vrat
According to the Agni Purana, observing seven consecutive Vrats starting from a Monday coinciding with the Chitra Nakshatra bestows all kinds of happiness upon a person. Furthermore, observing the Solah Somvar Vrat helps one attain their desired spouse or blessings. The Solah Somvar Vrat is considered exceptionally significant and potent for unmarried maidens.
