Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya! We humbly present the sacred narrative of Kamika Ekadashi, a most auspicious day dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu. This divine Vrat bestows immense blessings, purifies the soul, and deepens our devotion to the Lord. Let us immerse ourselves in its glorious Mahatmya.
The Auspicious Date and Profound Significance
The Ekadashi that falls during the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the Shravan month is known as “Kamika Ekadashi.” This sacred Ekadashi is revered as the destroyer of sins, the strengthener of devotion to Bhagwan Vishnu, and the most supreme day for offering service to Tulasi Mata. On this day, performing Puja of Bhagwan Vishnu in His Shankha, Chakra, Gada, and Padma-bearing form, offering deepdaan (lighting lamps), and observing an all-night vigil (ratri-jagran) bestows merits equivalent to performing a Vajapeya Yajna.
The Divine Narration: From Shri Krishna to Arjun
Bhagwan Shri Krishna addressed Arjuna, saying, “O Dhanurdhar (wielder of the bow)! This is that very sacred Ekadashi whose profound glory (Mahatmya) was narrated by Bhishma Pitamah to Devrishi Narad. Naradji humbly inquired, ‘O Pitamah! What is the name of the Ekadashi that falls during the Krishna Paksha of Shravan? What is its prescribed method of observance (Vidhi), and what are the fruits of observing it?’ Then Bhishma Pitamah replied, ‘O Narad! This Ekadashi of Shravan Krishna Paksha is renowned by the name ‘Kamika’. Merely listening to the Katha (sacred story) of this Vrat (vow) is believed to bestow the same merit as performing a Vajapeya Yajna.'”
On this day, one should devoutly perform Puja of Bhagwan Shri Vishnu, who holds the Shankha, Chakra, and Gada. Incense (Dhup), lamps (Deep), food offerings (Naivedya), flowers (Pushpa), fruits, and especially Tulasi leaves (Tulasi-dal) should be offered. A devotee who observes this Ekadashi attains merit not just equal to, but even greater than, bathing in the Ganga, bathing in the Gandaki during Vyatipat Yoga, or taking a pilgrimage bath at Kedar-Kurukshetra.
Bhishma continued, “O Narad! Even if a person performs Puja of Bhagwan Vishnu with devotion for just one day during the month of Shravan, they attain merits far surpassing those gained by donating the entire Earth with all its forests and groves. And if that very Puja is performed on Kamika Ekadashi, it burns away mountains of sins.”
The most beautiful aspect of this Ekadashi is that Bhagwan Shri Hari becomes immensely pleased by the Puja performed with Tulasi leaves. On one side, the donation of gems, gold, jewels, and pearls; and on the other, a single Tulasi leaf offered to the Lord with devotion – even this one Tulasi leaf is more beloved to Bhagwan. By merely beholding Tulasi Mata, sins are destroyed; by touching Her, the body becomes pure; by bathing with Her, the pains of Yama (death) are dispelled; and by offering Her at the feet of the Lord, the direct path to liberation (Mukti) opens.
Devotees who perform Deepdaan (offering lamps) and observe a vigil (Jagran) throughout the night of Kamika Ekadashi, chanting the divine names of Hari, accumulate such immense merits that even Chitragupta himself is unable to record them all. One who lights a lamp of ghee or sesame oil before the Lord ensures that their ancestors (Pitru) drink nectar in Swargaloka (heaven), and they themselves attain a radiance akin to the Surya Loka (the abode of the Sun God).
Bhagwan also stated that any person who fears sins, who wishes to be liberated from the ocean of worldly existence (Samsara Sagar), and who desires to avoid the sight of Yama (the Lord of Death) — must undoubtedly observe the Vrat of this Ekadashi. For Kamika Ekadashi diminishes even the gravest sins, such as Brahmahathya (killing a Brahmin), and ultimately grants the devotee attainment of Vishnuloka (the abode of Bhagwan Vishnu).
The Essence of This Sacred Vrat
The essence of Kamika Ekadashi is truly this: “What is most beloved to Bhagwan is that which is simple, pure, and fragrant with Tulasi.” Even a small Tulasi Puja performed on this day outweighs grand Yajnas. Therefore, observing a fast (Upvas) with devotion, performing Vishnu Puja, offering reverence to Tulasi (Tulasi-Archan), and lighting lamps (Deepdaan) – these constitute the very soul of this sacred Vrat.
