Beloved devotees, let us immerse ourselves in the sacred lore that illuminates the profound significance of our devotional practices. Every Vrat and Puja performed with a pure heart and unwavering faith holds immense power, and today, we reflect upon a beautiful Katha that reminds us of the importance of sincere dedication.
The bright, cool, and moon-drenched night of Sharad Purnima is not merely a festival for beholding the moon, but also a day for fulfilling one’s Sankalp (vows). To illustrate the power of such resolve, an ancient Katha is narrated.
In a certain village, there lived a wealthy merchant (Sahukar). He had two daughters—the elder was simple-hearted and full of devotion, while the younger was somewhat careless by nature. Both observed the Sharad Purnima Vrat, but their manner of observance was entirely different.
The **elder sister**, after bathing, purifying herself, lighting lamps, and awaiting the moonrise, would offer Naivedya of cold milk and butter, and only then, after offering Arghya to the moon, would she break her Vrat. She also ensured that the Vrat was not broken before midnight—only after its completion would she partake of any food.
The **younger sister** also observed the Vrat, but merely as a formality. Sometimes she would eat midway, sometimes break her Vrat without offering Arghya to the moon, and sometimes change the prescribed time for the rituals. She thought, “It’s enough that I’ve nominally observed the Vrat.”
Time passed, and both sisters were married. In due course, the elder sister was blessed with healthy, beautiful children. However, every child born to the younger sister would pass away within moments. This repeated sorrow broke her heart.
Eventually, she went to a revered ascetic (Sant) and, weeping, said, “Maharaj! What sin have I committed that my lap is repeatedly left empty?”
The Sant patiently replied, “Daughter! A Vrat yields its full fruit only when observed with **complete adherence to rules, unwavering faith, and at the proper time.** You kept breaking your Vrat midway, and thus, you did not receive its complete blessings. The night of Sharad Purnima is a night of grace from Chandra Dev himself. If one observes the Vrat with proper discipline on that day, one attains all three: **longevity, good health, and progeny.** This time, observe the Vrat with full dedication and according to all prescribed rituals; divine grace will surely be bestowed upon you.”
The younger sister understood her mistake. She resolved, “This time, I will observe the Vrat exactly as my elder sister does.” When Sharad Purnima arrived, she maintained self-control from dawn, engaging in Japa and Dhyana throughout the day. After the moon rose at night, she offered Arghya, presented Naivedya of cold Kheer, and only then broke her Vrat.
By the grace of Bhagwan, she conceived and, at the proper time, a son was born. However, due to her old, unfavorable karma, the child’s life departed immediately after birth. She was distraught, but one thought came to her mind: “My elder sister’s Vrat is unbroken; she is blessed with abundant grace from Chandra Dev.”
She laid the child on a small cot, covered him lightly, and called her elder sister. As soon as her sister arrived, she said, “Didi, please sit here for a moment.” The moment the pure, Vrat-observing garment of the elder sister touched the infant, **the lifeless child cried out and came back to life!**
The elder sister was astonished. “Oh, why did you leave such a tiny infant exposed like this? Even a slight carelessness could have harmed the child!”
Then the younger sister fell at her feet and narrated the entire incident. “Didi, this child had passed away immediately after birth. I was told that my old habit of incomplete observance of the Purnima Vrat was the cause of this sorrow. This time, I observed the Vrat completely, but the karmic obstruction at birth was still potent. I had faith that with the touch of your complete and sincere Vrat-shakti (power of Vrat), this child would come back to life… and so it happened.”
The elder sister said, “This is not my power; this is truly **the blessing of Chandra Dev on the night of Sharad Purnima** and the fruit of a fully observed Vrat. One should never take a Vrat lightly.”
From that day onwards, the popular belief became even stronger that if the **Sharad Purnima Vrat** is observed with faith, purity, at the correct time, and with complete adherence to rules, then the household is blessed with **the joy of children, good health, and abundant prosperity.**
**Essence of the Katha:** This Katha teaches us that the fruit of Vrat, Puja, and Japa is not determined by whether they were performed, but by *how* they were performed. A partially observed Vrat yields partial results, while a Vrat performed with complete faith can awaken even a destiny that seems dormant or lost. The radiant night of Sharad Purnima is truly a night for **resolving to achieve such completeness in our devotion.**
