एक बार की बात है त्रिपुर नामक राक्षस ने कठोर तपस्या की। त्रिपुर की इस घोर तपस्या के प्रभाव से सभी जड़-चेतन, जीव-जन्तु तथा देवता भयभीत होने लगे। तब देवताओं ने त्रिपुर की तपस्या को भंग करने के लिए खूबसूरत अप्सराएं भेजीं।
परंतु त्रक्षिपुर की कठोर तपस्या में वह बाधा डालने में सफल न पाईं। अंत में ब्रह्मा जी स्वयं उसके सामने प्रकट हुए तथा उससे वर मांगने के लिए कहा।
तब त्रिपुर ने ब्रह्मा जी से वर मांगते हुए कहा ‘न मैं देवताओं के हाथ से मरु, न मनुष्यों के हाथ से।’ वरदान मिलते ही त्रिपुर निडर होकर लोगों पर अत्याचार करने लगा। जब उसका इन बातों से भी मन न भरा तो, उसने कैलाश पर्वत पर ही चढ़ाई कर दी। इसके परिणाम स्वरूप भगवान शिव और त्रिपुर के बीच घमासान युद्ध होने लगा।
काफी समय तक युद्ध चलने के बाद अंत में भगवान शिव ने ब्रह्मा और विष्णु की सहायता से उसका वध कर दिया। इस दिन से ही क्षीरसागर दान का अनंत माहात्म्य माना जाता है।

The Sacred Katha of Kartik Purnima
Once upon a time, there lived a powerful demon named Tripur, who undertook severe austerities. The intensity of Tripur’s rigorous penance began to fill all beings – animate and inanimate, creatures and even the revered Devas – with fear. Alarmed, the Devas sent beautiful Apsaras to disrupt Tripur’s meditation.
However, they could not succeed in breaking his profound spiritual discipline. Finally, Bhagwan Brahma Himself appeared before Tripur and asked him to seek a boon.
Tripur then requested a boon from Bhagwan Brahma, saying, ‘Grant me that I shall not die by the hands of Devas, nor by the hands of humans.’ Upon receiving this boon, Tripur became fearless and began to oppress people mercilessly. When even this did not satiate his arrogance, he dared to attack Mount Kailash itself. Consequently, a fierce battle ensued between Bhagwan Shiva and Tripur.
After a prolonged and intense war, Bhagwan Shiva, with the divine assistance of Bhagwan Brahma and Bhagwan Vishnu, finally vanquished him. From that auspicious day onwards, the act of giving charity and performing Ksheersagar Dan is considered to hold infinite spiritual significance and bestow immeasurable blessings.
