Jai Chhathi Maiya! The sacred Chhath Parva is a profound festival of devotion, observed with immense faith and reverence for Bhagwan Suryadev and Chhathi Mata. It is a time for deep purification and heartfelt prayers for the well-being of one’s family, especially for the blessings of children. Let us explore the beautiful stories and rituals associated with this powerful Vrat.
The Sacred Chhath Vrat Katha
As the sacred tradition tells us, there once lived a king named Priyavrat, whose queen was Malini. However, they were not blessed with children, which caused great sorrow to both the king and his queen. One day, longing for a child, they performed a Putreshti Yajna with the guidance of Maharshi Kashyap. As a result of this sacred Yajna, the queen conceived.
After nine months, when the time came to experience the joy of parenthood, the queen gave birth to a lifeless son. Upon learning this, the king was overwhelmed with immense grief. In his profound sorrow for his child, he resolved to end his life. But just as the king attempted to take his own life, a beautiful Devi appeared before him.
The Devi told the king, “I am Devi Shashti. I bestow the fortune of a son upon people. Moreover, I fulfill all the desires of those who worship me with true devotion. If you worship me, I shall bless you with a precious son.” Deeply moved by the Devi’s words, the king followed her command.
The king and his queen, on the Shashti Tithi of Kartik Shukla Paksha, performed Devi Shashti’s Puja with complete rituals and devotion. As a result of this sacred Puja, they were blessed with a beautiful son. From that time onwards, the holy festival of Chhath began to be celebrated.
According to another narrative concerning Chhath Vrat, when the Pandavas lost their entire kingdom in a game of dice, Draupadi observed the Chhath Vrat. Through the power of this Vrat, her wishes were fulfilled, and the Pandavas regained their kingdom.
The unique festival of Chhath Parva, symbolizing the unwavering faith of devotees towards Bhagwan Suryadev, is celebrated according to the Hindu calendar from the Chathurthi to the Saptami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik.
The Sacred Rituals: How to Observe Chhath Vrat
Nahay Khay: The First Day: The Chhath Puja Vrat is observed for four days. On the first day, the ritual of Nahay Khay is performed. On this day, devotees should purify themselves by cleaning their homes and taking a holy bath, and then partake only in pure vegetarian food.
Kharna: The Second Day: On the second day, the ritual of Kharna is observed. During Kharna, devotees observe a full-day fast and, in the evening, partake in kheer made from rice cooked in jaggery or sugarcane juice as Prasad. The jaggery kheer prepared on this day is considered very nutritious and delicious.
Sandhya Arghya: Offering to the Setting Sun (Third Day): On the third day, known as Surya Shashti, devotees observe a full-day fast. In the evening, all Puja offerings are carefully placed in a bamboo basket (dala) and carried to the riverbank or a sacred pond to offer Arghya to the setting sun. After offering Arghya to the sun in the evening, devotees return home and keep all the sacred items as they were. On this night, devotees should sing devotional songs in praise of Chhathi Mata and listen to the Chhath Vrat Katha.
Usha Arghya: Offering to the Rising Sun (Fourth Day): Thereafter, returning home, on the next (fourth) day, devotees must reach the ghat before sunrise. Arghya should be offered to the first rays of the rising sun. After this, at the ghat, devotees should respectfully bow to Chhathi Mata and seek her blessings for the protection of their children. After offering Arghya, devotees return home, distribute Prasad among all, and then break their fast by partaking in the Prasad themselves.

It is believed that any devotee who observes this great Vrat with sincere devotion and proper rituals is never deprived of the joy of having children. As a result of this sacred Mahavrat, a person not only receives the blessing of children but also finds an end to all their troubles and sorrows.
