एक समय की बात है एक साहूकार अपनी पत्नी को विदा कराने के लिए अपने ससुराल गया। कुछ दिन वहां रहने के उपरांत उसने सास-ससुर से अपनी पत्नी को विदा करने के लिए कहा किंतु सास-ससुर तथा अन्य संबंधियों ने कहा कि “बेटा आज बुधवार है। बुधवार को किसी भी शुभ कार्य के लिए यात्रा नहीं करते।” लेकिन वह नहीं माना और हठ करके बुधवार के दिन ही पत्नी को विदा करवाकर अपने नगर को चल पड़ा।
राह में उसकी पत्नी को प्यास लगी, उसने पति से पीने के लिए पानी मांगा। साहूकार लोटा लेकर गाड़ी से उतरकर जल लेने चला गया। जब वह जल लेकर वापस आया तो वह बुरी तरह हैरान हो उठा, क्योंकि उसकी पत्नी के पास उसकी ही शक्ल-सूरत का एक दूसरा व्यक्ति बैठा था।
पत्नी भी अपने पति को देखकर हैरान रह गई। वह दोनों में कोई अंतर नहीं कर पाई। साहूकार ने पास बैठे शख्स से पूछा कि तुम कौन हो और मेरी पत्नी के पास क्यों बैठे हो? उसकी बात सुनकर उस व्यक्ति ने कहा- अरे भाई, यह मेरी पत्नी है। मैं अपनी पत्नी को ससुराल से विदा करा कर लाया हूं, लेकिन तुम कौन हो जो मुझसे ऐसा प्रश्न कर रहे हो? दोनों आपस में झगड़ने लगे। तभी राज्य के सिपाही आए और उन्होंने साहूकार को पकड़ लिया और स्त्री से पूछा कि तुम्हारा असली पति कौन है? उसकी पत्नी चुप रही क्योंकि दोनों को देखकर वह खुद हैरान थी कि वह किसे अपना पति कहे? साहूकार ईश्वर से प्रार्थना करते हुए बोला “हे भगवान, यह क्या लीला है?”
तभी आकाशवाणी हुई कि मूर्ख आज बुधवार के दिन तुझे शुभ कार्य के लिए गमन नहीं करना चाहिए था। तूने हठ में किसी की बात नहीं मानी। यह सब भगवान बुधदेव के प्रकोप से हो रहा है।
साहूकार ने भगवान बुधदेव से प्रार्थना की और अपनी गलती के लिए क्षमा याचना की। तब मनुष्य के रूप में आए बुध देवता अंतर्ध्यान हो गए। वह अपनी स्त्री को घर ले आया। इसके पश्चात पति-पत्नी नियमपूर्वक बुधवार व्रत करने लगे। जो व्यक्ति इस कथा को कहता या सुनता है उसको बुधवार के दिन यात्रा करने का कोई दोष नहीं लगता और उसे सभी प्रकार के सुखों की प्राप्ति होती है।
बुधवार का व्रत बुध ग्रह को शांत करने के लिए विशेष फलदायी माना जाता है । ज्ञान, कार्य, बुद्धि, व्यापार आदि में प्रगति के लिए बुधवार व्रत बेहद शुभ और फलदायी माना जाता है । बुधवार के दिन कई जगह बुद्ध देव के साथ भगवान गणेश की पूजा का भी विधान है ।
बुधवार व्रत विधि
अग्नि पुराण के अनुसार बुध-संबंधी व्रत विशाखा नक्षत्रयुक्त बुधवार को आरंभ करना चाहिए और लगातार सात बुधवार तक व्रत करना चाहिए । मान्यतानुसार बुधवार का व्रत शुरू करने से पहले गणेश जी के साथ नवग्रहों की पूजा करनी चाहिए । व्रत के दौरान भागवत महापुराण का पाठ करना चाहिए ।
बुधवार व्रत शुक्ल पक्ष के पहले बुधवार से शुरू करना अच्छा माना जाता है । इस दिन प्रात: सभी कार्यों से निवृत्त होकर भगवान बुध की पूजा करनी चाहिए । व्रत करने वाले जातक को हरे रंग की माला या वस्त्रों का अधिक प्रयोग करना चाहिए ।
भगवान बुध की मूर्ति ना होने पर शंकर जी की प्रतिमा के समीप भी पूजा की जा सकती है । पूरे दिन व्रत कर शाम के समय फिर से पूजा कर एक समय भोजन करना चाहिए । बुधवार व्रत में हरे रंग के वस्त्रों, फूलों और सब्जियों का दान देना चाहिए । इस दिन एक समय दही, मूंग दाल का हलवा या हरी वस्तु से बनी चीजों का सेवन करना चाहिए ।
बुधवार व्रत का फल
बुधवार का व्रत करने से व्यक्ति का जीवन में सुख-शांति और धन-धान्य से भरा रहता है । इसके अलावा लक्ष्मी जी उसकी सारी मनोकामनाएं पूर्ण करती हैं ।

Let us humbly immerse ourselves in the sacred narrative of the Wednesday Vrat, a tale that beautifully illustrates the importance of adhering to auspicious timings and the divine grace received through sincere devotion.
The Sacred Wednesday Vrat Katha
Once upon a time, a merchant went to his in-laws’ house to bring his wife home. After staying there for a few days, he requested his in-laws to allow his wife to return with him. However, his in-laws and other relatives advised, “Son, today is Wednesday. One should not undertake any auspicious journey on a Wednesday.” But he did not heed their words and, stubbornly, insisted on taking his wife home that very Wednesday, setting off for his own town.
On the way, his wife felt thirsty and asked her husband for water. The merchant took a pot, got down from the cart, and went to fetch water. When he returned with the water, he was utterly astonished, for another person, looking exactly like him, was sitting beside his wife.
The wife, too, was bewildered upon seeing her husband. She could not distinguish between the two. The merchant asked the person sitting nearby, “Who are you, and why are you sitting next to my wife?” Hearing his words, the other person replied, “Oh brother, this is my wife. I have brought my wife from her parental home. But who are you to question me like this?” The two began to quarrel. Just then, royal soldiers arrived, apprehended the merchant, and asked the woman, “Who is your real husband?” His wife remained silent, for she herself was confused upon seeing both of them, wondering whom to call her husband. The merchant prayed to Ishwara, exclaiming, “Oh Bhagwan, what kind of divine play is this?”
Just then, a divine voice from the heavens (Akashvani) declared, “Foolish one, you should not have undertaken an auspicious journey on this Wednesday. You stubbornly disregarded everyone’s advice. All this is happening due to the wrath of Bhagwan Budhdev.”
The merchant prayed to Bhagwan Budhdev and sought forgiveness for his mistake. Then, Budh Dev, who had appeared in human form, disappeared. The merchant brought his wife home. Thereafter, the husband and wife began to observe the Wednesday Vrat regularly. A person who narrates or listens to this sacred Katha is absolved of any fault for traveling on a Wednesday and attains all kinds of happiness.
Observing the Wednesday Vrat is considered especially fruitful for appeasing the planet Budh (Mercury). It is deemed highly auspicious and beneficial for progress in knowledge, work, intellect, business, and more. In many places, along with Budh Dev, Bhagwan Ganesh is also worshipped on Wednesdays.
The Sacred Procedure for Wednesday Vrat
As per the Agni Purana, the Vrat related to Budh should commence on a Wednesday coinciding with the Vishakha Nakshatra and be observed continuously for seven Wednesdays. According to tradition, before starting the Wednesday Vrat, one should perform Puja to Bhagwan Ganesh along with the Navagrahas. During the Vrat, one should recite the Bhagavat Mahapurana.
It is considered auspicious to begin the Wednesday Vrat from the first Wednesday of the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight). On this day, after completing all morning duties, one should perform Puja to Bhagwan Budh. The devotee observing the Vrat should predominantly use green garlands or green attire.
If an idol of Bhagwan Budh is not available, Puja can be performed near an idol of Bhagwan Shankar. After observing the fast throughout the day, one should perform Puja again in the evening and partake in a single meal. During the Wednesday Vrat, green clothes, flowers, and vegetables should be donated. On this day, one should consume items like curd, moong dal halwa, or other green preparations for their single meal.
