In the Sanatana tradition, Rahu is regarded as one of the principal shadow grahas among the Navagrahas. According to Puranic tradition, Rahu is associated with the son of Simhika, an Asura who sat among the Devas during the Samudra Manthan and consumed Amrita. After Lord Vishnu severed his body, his head became known as Rahu while the remaining portion became known as Ketu.

From an astronomical perspective, Rahu is not a physical planet. It is the astrological name for the northern lunar node, formed by the intersection of the Moon’s orbit with the apparent path of the Sun. In Indian astrological tradition, Rahu is associated with themes such as illusion, unusual circumstances, ambition, sudden change, foreign influences and worldly attachment.

Rahu Mantras need not be chanted only out of fear of a so-called “Rahu Dosha” in the birth chart. They may also be recited as a prayer for mental steadiness, discernment, self-restraint and wise decision-making during difficult circumstances. Simple Method of Chanting Rahu Mantras

• Take a bath, wear clean clothes and sit in a peaceful place.
• Begin the Puja by remembering Lord Shri Ganesha, your revered Guru and your chosen deity.
• A lamp and incense may be lit while meditating upon Rahu or the Navagrahas.
• Offer flowers, Akshata and Sattvic Naivedya according to your faith and capacity.
• Select any one principal mantra from those given below.
• For general devotional worship, the mantra may be chanted 11, 21 or 108 times.
• For a specialised Rahu Shanti Anushthan, follow the number of repetitions, day and timing prescribed by your Guru or Acharya tradition.
• At the conclusion of the Jaap, pray for the wisdom to avoid confusion, fear and impulsiveness and to make discerning decisions.

Important: It is not compulsory to chant Rahu Mantras only at night. The recommended time and method may vary across different astrological and Mantra Sadhana traditions. Simple Nama Jaap may be performed at a quiet and convenient time.

Principal Mantras of Shri Rahu Deva

Simple Name Mantra of Rahu

This is the simplest name mantra of Rahu. It may be chanted during general Navagraha Puja and daily remembrance.

Rahu Moola Mantra

This is a commonly recited short mantra dedicated to Rahu and is widely used in general Navagraha worship.

Rahu Beej Mantra

This is a renowned Beej Mantra of Rahu. The same form is also found in available versions of the Rahu Ashtottara Shatanama Stotra.

Important: For ordinary daily worship, “Om Rahave Namah” or “Om Raam Rahave Namah” are simpler and more suitable. Specialised Beej Mantra Sadhana, Nyasa, Homa or Purashcharana should preferably be undertaken under the guidance of a Guru.

Puranic Pranama Mantra of Rahu

This is a renowned salutation mantra of Rahu found in the Navagraha Stotra. It describes His half-bodied form, great power, association with eclipses of the Sun and Moon and His birth from Simhika.

Vedic Mantra Traditionally Used for Rahu in Navagraha Puja

In later traditions of Navagraha Puja, the following Richa is employed as a Vedic mantra for Rahu. It is important to note that in its original Rigvedic context, the presiding deity of this mantra is Indra, not Rahu.

Original Source: Rigveda 4.31.1 and Atharvaveda 20.124.1. In the original Vedic context, the deity is Indra. In later Navagraha Puja traditions, this mantra came to be employed for Rahu. It is advisable to learn the correct recitation with Vedic accents from a qualified Vedic Acharya.

Rahu Gayatri Mantra

Several versions of the Rahu Gayatri are found in modern and traditional mantra collections. The form given below is widely recited, but there is no clear evidence of an ancient Vedic source comparable to the original Gayatri Mantra. It is therefore more appropriate to understand it as a commonly recited Rahu Gayatri.

Textual Variations: Other forms of the Rahu Gayatri are also followed in different Guru traditions. For specialised Sadhana, give priority to the mantra received within your own spiritual tradition.

Simple Puja Method for Rahu Deva

During simple household Navagraha worship, the following offering mantras may be recited while meditating upon Rahu. It is not necessary for every traditional Puja item to be available. Worship may also be performed with sincere faith using a lamp, flowers and Naivedya.

It is not necessary to chant all the mantras together. For general worship, regular chanting of either “Om Rahave Namah” or “Om Raam Rahave Namah” is sufficient.

Traditional Significance of Rahu Mantra Jaap

In the astrological tradition, Rahu is associated with sudden change, unusual circumstances, illusion, ambition, foreign influences and worldly attachment. From a spiritual perspective, it is more balanced to approach Rahu worship as a Sadhana of discernment and self-restraint rather than as a source of fear.

• To pray for discernment while dealing with confusion and impulsive tendencies.
• To seek inspiration for developing restraint over excessive desires and attachment.
• To maintain patience during sudden or rapidly changing circumstances.
• To cultivate awareness and discernment instead of fear and superstition.
• As part of traditional astrological worship performed for the pacification of Rahu Graha.

In the Puranas, the story of solar and lunar eclipses is associated with Rahu. According to the traditional narrative, the Sun and Moon recognised Rahu while He was drinking Amrita, and Rahu therefore periodically attempts to swallow them. In modern astronomy, solar and lunar eclipses occur because of the geometric positions of the Earth, Sun and Moon in relation to the lunar nodes.

The religious narrative and astronomical explanation are best understood within their respective contexts. One belongs to the Puranic and spiritual tradition, while the other provides the scientific explanation of the physical process of eclipses.

Essential Precautions While Chanting Rahu Mantras

• Pronounce the mantra as clearly as possible and chant it at a calm pace.
• Chanting the mantra 18,000 times is not compulsory for ordinary devotional Jaap.
• It is not necessary to chant Rahu Mantras only at night.
• Specialised Beej Mantra Sadhana, Homa or Purashcharana should be undertaken under the guidance of a qualified Guru.
• Do not become fearful merely upon hearing terms such as “Rahu Dosha”, Rahu Mahadasha or Rahu transit.
