Shravan Putrada Ekadashi Fasting Story [ Vrat Katha ]
Dharma, Bhakti Aur Vraton Ke Mahatmy Ko Sunte-Sunte Dhanurdhar Arjun Ki Jijnasa Aur Bhi Badhti Chali Gayi. Unhonne Vinamr Hokar Shrikrishn Se Kaha – “He Prabhu! He Kamlnyan! Apne Ab Tak Jin-Jin Ekadshiyon Ki Katha Sunayi Hai, Unse Man Nihal Ho Gaya. Ab Kripa Karke Shravan Mas Ke Shukl Paksh Ki Ekadashi Ka Mahatmy Bhi Sunaiye. Uska Kya Nam Hai? Kis Devta Ka Pujan Hota Hai? Usmen Kya-Vidhan Hai? Aur Uske Vrat Se Kya Phal Prapt Hota Hai?”
Shrikrishn Bole – “He Parth! Dhyan Se Suno. Shravan Mas Ke Shukl Paksh Ki Jo Ekadashi Ati Hai, Uska Nam ‘Putrda Ekadashi’ Hai. Yah Ekadashi Vishesh Rup Se Santan-Prapti Ki Kamna Karne Valon Ke Liye Batayi Gayi Hai. Is Ekadashi Ka Vrat, Uska Pujan, Uska Ratri-Jagran – In Sabka Phal Itna Mahan Hai Ki Iske Shravan-Matr Se Hi Anant Yajnon Ka Phal Kaha Gaya Hai.”
“Dvapar Yug Ke Arambh Men Mahishmti Nam Ki Ek Badi Hi Samriddh Nagri Thi. Us Nagri Men Mahajit Nam Ka Ek Raja Rajy Karta Tha. Raja Dharmatma Tha, Prajavatsal Tha, Dani Tha, Vaishy Jaisa Sangrah N Karne Vala Tha, Aur Sabko Putrvat Mankar Palan Karta Tha – Parantu Ek Bat Use Din-Rat Salti Rahti Thi Ki Vah Putrhin Tha.
He Arjun! Putr Ka N Hona Purush Ke Liye Atyant Duhkh Ka Karan Mana Gaya Hai, Kyonki Shastron Men Kaha Gaya Hai – Bina Putr Ke N Ihlok Siddh Hota Hai, N Pitri-Rin Utrta Hai Aur N Parlok Men Sthayi Sukh Milta Hai. Yahi Chinta Us Raja Mahajit Ko Khaye Ja Rahi Thi. Jitna Vah Vriddh Hota Gaya, Utni Hi Uski Chinta Bhi Badhti Gayi. Rajy, Dhan, Hathi, Ghode, Ratn, Stri – Sab Kuchhh Hote Huye Bhi Uske Liye Vah Sab Phika Tha, Kyonki Putr Nahin Tha.
Ek Din Us Raja Ne Apni Sabha Men Mantriyon, Purohiton Aur Sabhasdon Se Kaha – “He Jano! Mainne Apne Jivan Men N To Anyaypurn Kar Liya, N Praja Ko Sataya, N Kisi Brahmin Ya Devta Ka Apman Kiya, N Hi Kisi Ki Vastu Chhhinkar Bhogi Hun. Phir Bhi Putr-Sukh Se Vanchit Hun. Yah Kis Pap Ka Phal Hai? Ap Log Vichar Kijiye. Yadi Iska Koi Upay Ho To Bataiye.”
Raja Ka Yah Karun Nivedan Sunkar Mantri, Purohit Aur Sabhasad Sab Duhkhi Ho Gaye. Unhonne Apas Men Vichar Kiya Ki “Raja Ka Duhkh Hamara Duhkh Hai. Raja Ne Hamen Putrvat Pala Hai, Ab Hamara Dharma Hai Ki Uske Duhkh Ka Upay Khojen.”
Phir Ve Sab Raja Ki Ajna Se Van Ki Or Gaye, Taki Kisi Mahan Tapasvi, Rishi Ya Yogi Se Milkar Raja Ki Putr-Prapti Ka Upay Jan Saken. Van Men Ghumte-Ghumte Ve Sab Ek Bade Hi Tejasvi, Vriddh Aur Dharma Ke Rahasyon Ke Jnata Maharshi Lomash Ke Ashram Par Ja Pahunche.
Mantrignon Ne Vinamrtapurvak Pranam Kiya Aur Bole – “He Munivar! Aj Hamara Bhagy Udit Hua Ki Apke Darshan Hue. Ham Ek Dharmyukt, Parantu Putrvihin Raja Ka Sandesh Lekar Aye Hain. Raja Mahajit Mahishmti Nagri Men Rajy Karte Hain. Ve Dharmatma Hain, Praja Ka Palan Putrvat Karte Hain, Kisi Prakar Ka Anyay Nahin Karte – Phir Bhi Unhen Putr Nahin Hai Aur Isi Karan Ve Atyant Duhkhi Hain. He Munivar! Ham Sab Unki Praja Hain, Isliye Ham Bhi Unke Duhkh Se Duhkhi Hain. Kripa Karke Bataiye – Iska Karan Kya Hai Aur Samadhan Kya Hai?”
Maharshi Lomash Ne Sabki Vinamrta Aur Raja Ke Dharma Ka Gungan Suna. Phir Unhonne Netr Band Kar Ke Apne Divy Jnan Se Raja Mahajit Ke Purvjanm Ka Chintan Kiya. Kuchhh Kshan Bad Ve Bole – “He Bhadrjno! Tumne Jo Kaha Vah Saty Hai – Raja Is Janm Men Dharmatma Hain, Parantu Purvjanm Ka Karma Abhi Shesh Hai. Usi Ke Karan Ve Putrhin Hain.”
Mantrion Ne Vinamrta Se Puchhha – “Bhagvan! Vah Purvjanm Ka Kaun-Sa Karma Hai?”
Maharshi Lomash Bole – “Purvjanm Men Yah Raja Ek Ghumantu Vyakti Tha, Gram Se Gram Bhraman Karta Tha. Ek Bar Jyeshth Mas Ke Shukl Paksh Ki Ekadashi Ka Din Tha. Yah Do Din Se Bhukha Tha Aur Ek Sarovar Par Jal Pine Gaya. Usi Samay Vahan Ek Byayi (Abhi-Abhi Prasav Kar Chuki) Gau Apne Thake Sharir Se Jal Pi Rahi Thi. Yah Aya Aur Us Gau Ko Hata Kar Svayan Jal Pine Laga.
He Sabhasdo! Us Din Ekadashi Hone Se Upvas Ka Jo Puny Tha, Vah Iske Liye Phalkarak Ban Gaya – Isi Se Yah Janm Men Raja Hua. Parantu Pyasi, Byayi Gau Ko Hata Kar Svayan Jal Pine Ka Jo Apradh Hua, Usi Ka Yah Phal Hai Ki Ab Raja Putrhin Hai. Dharma Ek Pal Bhi Vyarth Nahin Jata Aur Adharm Ek Pal Bhi Bachta Nahin Hai.”
Yah Sunkar Mantri Aur Sabhasad Kahne Lage – “He Munishreshth! Shastra Kahte Hain Ki Puny Pap Ko Kat Deta Hai. Ap Kripa Karke Koi Aisa Vrat, Aisa Upay, Aisa Dan Bataiye, Jisse Raja Is Dosh Se Mukt Ho Kar Putrvan Ho Jayen.”
Maharshi Lomash Ne Prasann Hokar Kaha – “Achchhha, Suno. Shravan Mas Ke Shukl Paksh Ki Jo Ekadashi Hai, Uska Nam ‘Putrda Ekadashi’ Hai. Yadi Tum Sab Us Din Vidhi-Vidhan Se Vrat Karoge, Ratri-Jagran Karoge, Bhagwan Vishnu Ki Puja Karoge Aur Phir Us Vrat Ka Samast Puny Apne Raja Ko Arpit Kar Doge – ‘Etat Phalam Asmat Rajne Mahajitay Samarpyamah’ Aisa Sankalp Karoge – To Nishchay Hi Tumhare Raja Ko Putr Prapt Hoga. Purvjanm Ka Dosh Bhi Mitega Aur Is Janm Ki Abhilasha Bhi Puri Hogi.”
Yah Sunkar Mantrignon Ne Muni Ko Bar-Bar Pranam Kiya, Ashirwad Liya Aur Harshit Chitt Se Mahishmti Laut Aye. Lautkar Unhonne Raja Ko Sab Hal Sunaya Aur Phir Nagar Bhar Men Ghoshna Kara Di Ki Amuk Tithi Ko Shravan Shukl Ki Putrda Ekadashi Ka Vrat Sab Karen.
Nirdharit Din Aya. Raja Ke Hit Ki Bhavna Se Mantri, Purohit, Raniyan, Sevak, Nagrik – Sabhi Ne Milkar Putrda Ekadashi Ka Upvas Kiya, Bhagwan Vishnu Ki Aradhana, Katha-Shravan, Harinam-Sankirtan Tatha Ratri-Jagran Kiya.
Dvadshi Ke Din Sabne Milkar Ek Hi Sankalp Kiya – “He Bhagwan Vishnu! Is Vrat Se Jo Puny Hamen Prapt Hua Hai, Vah Ham Apne Dharmapriy, Prajavatsal, Parantu Putrhin Raja Mahajit Ko Arpit Karte Hain. Unke Dosh Nasht Hon, Unhen Yogy Putr Prapt Ho.”
Bhagwan Ki Kripa Se Shighr Hi Vahi Hua. Rani Ne Garbh Dharan Kiya Aur Nau Mas Purn Hone Par Ek Atyant Tejasvi, Rupvan, Rajlakshnon Se Yukt, Buddhiman Aur Kul Ka Deepak Banne Vala Putr Utpann Hua. Raja Ka Hriday Anand Se Bhar Gaya, Praja Ne Utsav Manaya, Aur Sabne Jana Ki Yah Shravan Shukl Ki Putrda Ekadashi Ke Vrat Ka Hi Prabhav Hai.
Shrikrishn Ne Arjun Se Kaha – “He Pandunandan! Isiliye Ise ‘Putrda’ Kaha Gaya. Jo Manushy Santan-Sukh Ki Ichchhha Se, Ya Apne Kisi Bandhu-Bandhav Ki Santan-Prapti Ki Ichchhha Se, Ya Pitri-Tripti Ki Bhavna Se Yah Vrat Karta Hai Aur Bhagwan Shrihri Ka Pujan Karta Hai, Use Santan-Sukh Avashy Milta Hai. Is Vrat Se Ihlok Men Man-Samman, Sthir Sukh Aur Parlok Men Svarg Ki Prapti Hoti Hai.”
Katha-Sar
Yah Katha Yah Sikhati Hai Ki Pap Chhhota Ho Ya Sukshm – Uska Phal Milta Hi Hai, Jaise Us Din Gau Ko Hatakar Jal Pine Ka Phal ‘Putrhinta’ Ke Rup Men Mila. Aur Yah Bhi Spasht Hota Hai Ki Ekadashi Jaisa Mahattvpurn Vrat Yadi Sahi Sankalp Ke Sath Kiya Jaye To Purvjanm Ka Dosh Bhi Mit Sakta Hai. Dharmyukt Praja Yadi Milkar Raja Ke Liye Prarthana Kare Aur Vrat Ka Phal Samarpit Kare To Raja Ka Duhkh Bhi Dur Ho Jata Hai. Isliye Is Ekadashi Ko ‘Putrda’ Kaha Gaya Aur Yah Santan-Sukh Ki Kamna Karne Valon Ke Liye Kalpavriksh Ke Saman Mani Gayi Hai.
Jai Shri Krishna! Beloved devotees, immerse yourselves in the sacred narratives that reveal the profound glory of Dharma, devotion, and Vratas. Today, let us humbly listen to a beautiful Katha from the Puranas, as narrated by Bhagwan Shri Krishna to Arjuna, illustrating the immense power of faith and the blessings bestowed by the divine.
The Sacred Katha: How Childless King Mahajit Was Blessed with a Son
As the archer Arjuna listened to the glory of Dharma, devotion, and Vratas, his spiritual curiosity grew even more. He humbly said to Shri Krishna, “O Prabhu! O Lotus-Eyed One! My heart has been immensely pleased by all the Ekadashi Kathas You have narrated so far. Now, please graciously narrate the glory of the Ekadashi that falls in the Shukla Paksha of Shravan Maas. What is its name? Which Deity is worshipped on it? What are its prescribed rituals? And what fruits are obtained by observing its Vrat?”
Shri Krishna said, “O Partha! Listen attentively. The Ekadashi that comes in the Shukla Paksha of Shravan Maas is named ‘Putrada Ekadashi’. This Ekadashi is specifically meant for those who desire to be blessed with children. The observance of this Ekadashi’s Vrat, its Puja, and its night-vigil (Ratri-Jagaran) yield such immense fruits that merely hearing about it is said to bestow the merit of countless Yagnas.”
“In the beginning of the Dwapar Yuga, there was a very prosperous city named Mahishmati. In that city, a king named Mahajit reigned. The king was righteous (Dharmatma), affectionate towards his subjects (Prajavatsal), generous (Daani), not one to hoard like a merchant, and he nurtured everyone as his own children – yet, one sorrow gnawed at him day and night: he was childless.
O Arjuna! Not having a son is considered a cause of immense sorrow for a man, for the scriptures state that without a son, neither is this earthly life (Ihalok) fulfilled, nor is the ancestral debt (Pitri-Rin) repaid, nor is lasting happiness attained in the afterlife (Paralok). This very worry consumed King Mahajit. The older he grew, the more his anxiety increased. Despite having a kingdom, wealth, elephants, horses, jewels, and a queen – everything felt meaningless to him, because he had no son.
One day, in his court, the king addressed his ministers, priests, and courtiers, saying, “O esteemed people! In my life, I have neither collected unjust taxes, nor oppressed my subjects, nor insulted any Brahmin or Deity, nor have I ever seized anyone’s possessions for my own enjoyment. Yet, I am deprived of the joy of a son. What sin is this the fruit of? Please deliberate upon this. If there is any solution, please tell me.”
Hearing the king’s heartfelt plea, the ministers, priests, and courtiers all became sorrowful. They deliberated amongst themselves, saying, “The king’s sorrow is our sorrow. The king has nurtured us as his own children; now it is our Dharma to find a remedy for his grief.”
Then, with the king’s permission, they all set off towards the forest, hoping to meet a great ascetic, Rishi, or Yogi who could reveal the means for the king to attain a son. Wandering through the forest, they eventually arrived at the ashram of the highly effulgent, ancient, and wise Maharshi Lomash, who was a knower of the mysteries of Dharma.
The ministers humbly prostrated themselves and said, “O great Sage! Our fortune has truly risen today, for we have been blessed with your Darshan. We have come bearing a message from a righteous, yet childless king. King Mahajit reigns in the city of Mahishmati. He is a righteous soul (Dharmatma), he nurtures his subjects as his own children, and he commits no injustice – yet, he has no son, and for this reason, he is exceedingly sorrowful. O great Sage! We are all his subjects, and therefore we too are grieved by his sorrow. Please graciously tell us – what is the cause of this, and what is its solution?”
Maharishi Lomash, being pleased, said, “Very well, listen. The Ekadashi that falls in the Shukla Paksha of the month of Shravan is known as ‘Putrada Ekadashi’. If all of you observe this Vrat on that day according to the proper Vidhi, keep night vigil, worship Bhagwan Vishnu, and then offer the entire merit of that Vrat to your king with the Sankalp — ‘Etat Phalam Asmat Rajne Mahajitaya Samarpayamah’ — then your king will surely be blessed with a son. The fault of his previous birth will also be removed, and the desire of this birth will be fulfilled.”
Hearing this, the ministers bowed again and again to the sage, received his blessings, and returned to Mahishmati with joyful hearts. After returning, they narrated everything to the king and then had an announcement made throughout the city that everyone should observe the Shravan Shukla Putrada Ekadashi Vrat on the appointed Tithi.
The appointed day arrived. With the welfare of the king in their hearts, the ministers, priests, queens, servants, and citizens all observed the Putrada Ekadashi fast together. They worshipped Bhagwan Vishnu, listened to the Katha, performed Harinam Sankirtan, and kept night vigil with devotion.
On the day of Dwadashi, they all made one collective Sankalp: “O Bhagwan Vishnu! Whatever merit we have received from this Vrat, we offer it to our dharmic, compassionate, and childless king Mahajit. May his faults be destroyed, and may he be blessed with a worthy son.”
By the grace of Bhagwan, this soon came to pass. The queen conceived, and after nine months, she gave birth to a radiant, handsome, intelligent son, blessed with royal qualities and destined to become the light of the dynasty. The king’s heart was filled with joy, the people celebrated, and everyone understood that this was the divine effect of the Shravan Shukla Putrada Ekadashi Vrat.
Shri Krishna said to Arjun, “O son of Pandu! For this reason, this Ekadashi is called ‘Putrada’. Whoever observes this Vrat with the desire for children, or for the blessing of children for a relative or loved one, or with the feeling of satisfying the ancestors, and worships Bhagwan Shri Hari, surely receives the blessing of children. By this Vrat, one receives honor, stable happiness in this world, and the attainment of Swarg in the next.”
Summary of the Katha
This Katha teaches that whether a sin is small or subtle, its fruit must be faced. Just as the act of moving the cow away and drinking water first resulted in childlessness, it also becomes clear that a sacred Vrat like Ekadashi, when performed with the right Sankalp, can remove even the faults of a previous birth. When a dharmic people come together, pray for their king, and dedicate the merit of the Vrat to him, even the king’s sorrow is removed. Therefore, this Ekadashi is called ‘Putrada’ and is considered like a wish-fulfilling Kalpavriksha for those who desire the blessing of children.
