Pausha Shukla Putrada Ekadashi Fasting Story [ Vrat Katha ]
With a heart full of devotion, let us immerse ourselves in the sacred narrative of Putrada Ekadashi, a day dedicated to Bhagwan Shri Hari, known for bestowing the precious gift of progeny upon sincere devotees. This divine Katha, narrated by Shri Krishna himself, highlights the power of faith and the blessings received through observing this holy Vrat.
The Sacred Katha of King Suketuman’s Quest for a Son
Arjuna’s Humble Prayer: Bowing at the lotus feet of Shri Krishna, Arjuna humbly asked — “O Madhusudana! Please tell me the name, the prescribed method (Vidhan), and the fruits of observing the Ekadashi that falls in the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) of the Pausha month. Which Deity is worshipped on that day?”
Shri Krishna Replied: “O Arjuna! The Ekadashi that falls in the Shukla Paksha of Pausha month is known as ‘Putrada Ekadashi’. The Vrat and Puja for this Ekadashi are similar to those described for other Ekadashis, but it holds a special significance and unique fruit — it bestows a virtuous son upon those who are childless. On this day, one should worship Bhagwan Shri Hari. For those in this world who long for a son, there is no greater Vrat than this. By its sacred influence, a person becomes learned, ascetic, wealthy, and endowed with great merit (Punya).”
The Story of the Childless King Suketuman
In ancient times, in the city named Bhadravati, there ruled a righteous king named Suketuman. His queen was named Shaivya. Despite having a vast kingdom, immense wealth, elephants, horses, a treasury, and loyal subjects — everything one could desire — the king harbored one deep sorrow in his heart — he had no son.
Without a son, this worry constantly gnawed at him — “Who will offer the Pind Daan after me? Who will sustain my ancestors (Pitru)?” Meanwhile, in the Pitruloka (ancestral realm), his ancestors were also anxious, wondering, “Who will perform our Shraddha rites and satisfy us after Suketuman?”
The king performed numerous Yagnas, fed Brahmins, and gave generously in charity — yet, he remained childless. Again and again, the thought would come to his mind, “If I depart from this world without a son, this life will have been in vain.” For a moment, even the thought of ending his life crossed his mind, but immediately he reflected, “Suicide is a great sin (Mahapap),” and he cast that thought away.
One day, he rode his horse and set off towards the forest. Witnessing the beauty of the forest, his mind became even more detached and sorrowful — deer frolicked with their fawns, monkeys played in their troops, peacocks danced with their families, and elephants walked amidst their mates and calves. Everywhere, there was a scene of parental joy, and he, himself, was without a child!
Lost in these thoughts, noon arrived. He also felt thirsty. He moved forward in search of water. After traveling a short distance, he saw a beautiful lake where swans, cranes, and various lotus flowers bloomed, and around it, many Rishi-Munis (sages and ascetics) resided. Considering the twitching of his right limb as an auspicious omen, he dismounted his horse and humbly bowed to the sages.
The Rishis Inquired: “O King! For what purpose have you come here? We are pleased with you, ask for a boon.”
The King, with folded hands, said — “O revered ones! I am childless. Who are you, and for what sacred purpose have you gathered here?”
The Rishis Revealed: “O King! Today is Pausha Shukla Ekadashi — the very one renowned by the name ‘Putrada’. Whoever observes a Vrat today with the desire for a son, surely receives a son. We have all gathered here for the upcoming sacred Magha-Snan (bath in the month of Magha).”
The King immediately said — “If this day indeed bestows sons, then please, I implore you, bless me too with the jewel of a son!”
The Sages Instructed: “Observe the Vrat today itself. Take a Sankalp (vow) and worship Bhagwan Vishnu. Perform the Parana (breaking the fast) on Dwadashi according to the prescribed rituals. By the grace of Shri Hari, you will surely be blessed with a son.”
The king immediately took the Sankalp, observed the Upvas (fast) for Putrada Ekadashi, chanted the sacred names of Hari throughout the night, and the next day, after respectfully bowing to the sages, he returned to his city.
After some time, by the divine grace of Bhagwan, Queen Shaivya conceived and at the appointed time, gave birth to a radiant, virtuous, and mighty son. Growing up, he became a righteous, brave, and benevolent king, devoted to his subjects — precisely the son for whom Suketuman had yearned and suffered for so long.
Shri Krishna’s Divine Counsel
Shri Krishna told Arjuna: “O Pandunandana (son of Pandu)! Any man or woman who observes the Vrat of this Putrada Ekadashi in the Shukla Paksha of Pausha month with the desire for a child, is blessed with the arrival of a virtuous son in their home. Whoever listens to or narrates the glory (Mahatmya) of this Vrat also attains auspicious progeny and the abode of Bhagwan Vishnu. No other means for attaining a son has been described as superior to this.”
The Essence of the Sacred Katha
• While not having a son is a difficult situation, even more challenging is having an undeserving son. • The Putrada Ekadashi Vrat is not merely for the desire of a “son,” but for a “virtuous and noble son.” • The roots of success for any Vrat lie in two things — the company of saints (Sant-Samagam) and remembrance of Bhagwan (Bhagavad-Smaran). • In this Kaliyuga, among the Vrats sanctioned by the scriptures, this Ekadashi is said to be extremely fruitful for attaining children. • Whoever reads or listens to its Mahatmya with devotion easily finds the path to be freed from Pitru-Rina (ancestral debt).
