Nag Panchami is an important festival in the Sanatana tradition, during which the Naga Devas are worshipped with reverence. The festival is generally observed on the Panchami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Shravan. Along with the worship of the Naga Devas, devotees also traditionally worship Lord Shiva on this sacred day.
Many regional stories and beliefs are associated with Nag Panchami. Among them, the story of the farmer and the serpent mother is especially popular in North India as the Nag Panchami Vrat Katha.
Important: The story of the farmer and the serpent mother belongs primarily to the popular Vrat Katha tradition. It would not be appropriate to present it as the original narrative of any one particular Purana. Among the scriptural narratives associated with Nagas, the Sarpa Satra of King Janamejaya and the episode of Sage Astika in the Mahabharata is especially significant.
Popular Nag Panchami Vrat Katha
According to a popular traditional story, there once lived a farmer with his family. He supported his household through farming. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
One day, while the farmer was ploughing his field, the young offspring of a serpent mother were hidden beneath the soil. The farmer was unaware of their presence. While ploughing, the tip of the plough accidentally killed the young serpents.
The farmer did not even realise that such a tragic incident had occurred unintentionally.
Some time later, when the serpent mother returned, she found her young ones dead. Overcome with grief and anger at the sight of her offspring, she became deeply distressed.
Driven by anger and a desire for revenge, the serpent mother reached the farmer’s house. According to the popular story, she bit the farmer and members of his family.
One of the farmer’s daughters was not present there at the time. When the serpent mother learned about her, she went to the daughter with the intention of biting her as well.
However, when the farmer’s daughter saw the serpent mother, she did not respond with violence. Instead, she welcomed her respectfully, placed milk before her and worshipped her with devotion.
The girl humbly asked for forgiveness and explained that the death of the young serpents had not been caused intentionally by her father.
Seeing the girl’s devotion, compassion and simplicity, the serpent mother’s anger gradually began to subside.
Pleased with the girl, the serpent mother said—
“Daughter! I am pleased with your devotion. Ask for whatever blessing you desire.”
The girl did not ask for wealth, luxury or personal happiness. Instead, she prayed for the lives of her family members.
She said to the serpent mother—
“If you are pleased with me, please show compassion towards my parents and family and grant them their lives again.”
The serpent mother was deeply pleased by the girl’s selfless heart. According to the popular traditional story, through the grace of the serpent mother, the farmer and his family were restored to life.
After this, the girl expressed her reverence towards the Naga Devas, and the family resolved that they would never unnecessarily harm serpents or other living beings in the future.
Through this story, Nag Panchami reminds devotees of the values of compassion towards living beings, Ahimsa, forgiveness and respect for nature.
Puranic Significance of Nag Panchami
The religious significance of Nag Panchami should not be understood only through the popular story of the farmer and the serpent mother. Nagas are mentioned in many important episodes throughout the sacred texts of the Sanatana tradition.
Shesha Naga, Vasuki, Takshaka and Karkotaka, among others, are described in various religious scriptures.
Lord Vishnu reclining upon Shesha Naga, the important role of Vasuki Naga during the Samudra Manthan and Lord Shiva wearing a serpent around His neck all demonstrate the distinctive religious significance of Nagas in the Sanatana tradition.
King Janamejaya’s Sarpa Satra and Sage Astika
One of the most important scriptural narratives concerning Nagas in the Mahabharata is the Sarpa Satra of King Janamejaya.
King Janamejaya’s father, King Parikshit, died after being bitten by Takshaka Naga. Grief-stricken and enraged by his father’s death, Janamejaya initiated a great Sarpa Satra, or serpent sacrifice, with the intention of destroying the Nagas.
Through the power of the mantras being recited during the Yajna, numerous serpents began to be drawn towards the sacrificial fire and fell into it. The situation became so severe that the entire Naga lineage faced grave danger.
At that time, Sage Astika arrived at the Yajna. Sage Astika was highly learned and deeply knowledgeable in Dharma. He pleased King Janamejaya, who then invited him to ask for a boon.
As his boon, Sage Astika requested that the Sarpa Satra be stopped.
King Janamejaya honoured his word and brought the sacrifice to an end. In this way, through the intervention of Sage Astika, the widespread destruction of the Nagas was prevented.
This episode is described in detail in the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata and is one of the most important scriptural narratives associated with the Naga tradition.
Lord Shiva and the Nagas
The Nagas are also deeply connected with the divine form of Lord Shiva. In many sacred images and Murtis, Lord Shiva is depicted wearing a serpent around His neck.
Lord Shiva’s serpent-adorned form reminds devotees of fearlessness, Vairagya and the Shiva Tattva that exists beyond the fear of death.
For this reason, many devotees of Lord Shiva also perform His worship and Abhishek of the Shivlinga on Nag Panchami.
Lord Vishnu and Shesha Naga
The divine form of Lord Vishnu is also deeply connected with the Naga tradition. Lord Vishnu is traditionally depicted reclining upon Ananta Shesha.
Shesha Naga holds an especially significant position in the Sanatana tradition. This reminds us that Nagas are not merely symbols of fear; in many sacred narratives, they are closely associated with divine forms and cosmic symbolism.
Samudra Manthan and Vasuki Naga
In the renowned Puranic episode of the Samudra Manthan, Vasuki Naga played an important role.
The Devas and Asuras used Mount Mandarachala as the churning rod and Vasuki Naga as the rope while churning the Kshirasagara. This sacred narrative also demonstrates the distinctive place of Nagas in the Sanatana tradition.
What Does Nag Panchami Teach Us?
Nag Panchami should not be understood merely as a festival in which serpents are worshipped out of fear. The religious and popular traditions associated with this festival remind us that human beings are not separate from nature.
The story of the farmer and the serpent mother contains the themes of unintentional harm, revenge, compassion and ultimately forgiveness.
The episode of Sage Astika, meanwhile, teaches that the destruction of an entire community out of revenge is not a Dharma-aligned solution.
Therefore, along with reverence for the Naga Devas, the values of compassion towards living beings, Ahimsa, self-restraint and respect for nature are deeply aligned with the spirit of Nag Panchami.
Which Naga Devas Are Remembered on Nag Panchami?
Different traditions of Naga worship remember many sacred Nagas by name. Commonly remembered names include Ananta, Vasuki, Shesha, Padma, Kambala, Karkotaka, Ashvatara, Dhritarashtra, Shankhapala, Kaliya and Takshaka.
The list of names may vary slightly across different scriptures and Puja traditions.
Simple Devotional Practice for Nag Panchami Puja
On Nag Panchami, devotees traditionally take a morning bath and remember Lord Shiva and the Naga Devas. According to local tradition and family custom, an image or symbolic representation of the Naga Devas may be prepared and worshipped.
Flowers, Akshata, Gandha and other simple offerings may be presented during the Puja, and devotees pray to the Naga Devas for the protection and welfare of the family.
Capturing, disturbing or forcibly feeding milk to a living snake is not a religious requirement. Snakes do not naturally depend upon milk as food. Genuine reverence for the Nagas also includes respecting their natural habitat, safety and well-being.
Message of the Nag Panchami Vrat Katha
The deeper meaning of the popular Nag Panchami Katha lies not merely in the miraculous elements of the story, but in the values it conveys.
Practise Ahimsa.
Show compassion towards living beings.
Respect nature.
Choose forgiveness over anger.
Respect the existence of every living being within the creation of the Divine.
Respectful salutations to the Naga Devas.
Om Namah Shivaya॥
Naga Devatabhyo Namah॥
