हिन्दू धर्मानुसार कार्तिक महीना बेहद शुभ माना जाता है ! इस महीने का एक अहम त्यौहार है गोवर्धन -पूजा ! गोवर्धन पूजा को कई लोग अन्नकूट के नाम से भी जानते हैं ! इस दिन भगवान श्रीकृष्ण, गोवर्धन पर्वत और गाय माता की पूजा की जाती है ! महाभारत, समेत कई हिन्दू ग्रंथों में इस व्रत का वर्णन किया गया है !
गोवर्धन पूजा से संबंधित कथा
एक बार की बात है इंद्र को अपनी शक्तियों पर घमंड हो गया। तब भगवान कृष्ण ने उनके घमंड को चूर करने के लिए एक लीला रची। इसमें उन्होंने सभी ब्रजवासियों और अपनी माता को एक पूजा की तैयारी करते हुए देखा तो, यशोदा मां से पूछने लगे, “मईया आप सब किसकी पूजा की तैयारी कर रहे हैं?” तब माता ने उन्हें बताया कि ‘वह इन्द्रदेव की पूजा की तैयारी कर रही हैं।”
फिर भगवान कृष्ण ने पूछा “मैइया हम सब इंद्र की पूजा क्यों करते है? तब मईया ने बताया कि ‘इंद्र वर्षा करते हैं और उसी से हमें अन्न और हमारी गाय के घास मिलता है। यह सुनकर कृष्ण जी ने तुरंत कहा “मैइया हमारी गाय तो अन्न गोवर्धन पर्वत पर चरती है, तो हमारे लिए वही पूजनीय होना चाहिए। इंद्र देव तो घमंडी हैं वह कभी दर्शन नहीं देते हैं।
कृष्ण की बात मानते हुए सभी ब्रजवासियों ने इन्द्रदेव के स्थान पर गोवर्धन पर्वत की पूजा की। इस पर क्रोधित होकर भगवान इंद्र ने मूसलाधार बारिश शुरू कर दी। वर्षा को बाढ़ का रूप लेते देख सभी ब्रज के निवासी भगवान कृष्ण को कोसने लगें। तब कृष्ण जी ने वर्षा से लोगों की रक्षा करने के लिए गोवर्धन पर्वत को अपनी कानी उंगली पर उठा लिया।
इसके बाद सब को अपने गाय सहित पर्वत के नीचे शरण लेने को कहा। इससे इंद्र देव और अधिक क्रोधित हो गए तथा वर्षा की गति और तेज कर दी। इन्द्र का अभिमान चूर करने के लिए तब श्री कृष्ण ने सुदर्शन चक्र से कहा कि आप पर्वत के ऊपर रहकर वर्षा की गति को नियंत्रित करने को और शेषनाग से मेंड़ बनाकर पर्वत की ओर पानी आने से रोकने को कहा।
इंद्र देव लगातार रात- दिन मूसलाधार वर्षा करते रहे। काफी समय बीत जाने के बाद उन्हें एहसास हुआ कि कृष्ण कोई साधारण मनुष्य नहीं हैं। तब वह ब्रह्मा जी के पास गए तब उन्हें ज्ञात हुआ की श्रीकृष्ण कोई और नहीं स्वयं श्री हरि विष्णु के अवतार हैं। इतना सुनते ही वह श्री कृष्ण के पास जाकर उनसे क्षमा याचना करने लगें। इसके बाद देवराज इन्द्र ने कृष्ण की पूजा की और उन्हें भोग लगाया। तभी से गोवर्धन पूजा की परंपरा कायम है। मान्यता है कि इस दिन गोवर्धन पर्वत और गायों की पूजा करने से भगवान कृष्ण प्रसन्न होते हैं।
गोवर्धन पूजा विधि
इस दिन प्रातः स्नान करके पूजा स्थल पर गोबर से गोवर्धन पर्वत बनाना चाहिए ! इस पर्वत पर श्रद्धापूर्वक अक्षत,चंदन, धूप, फूल आदि चढ़ाना चाहिए ! पर्वत के सामने दीप जलाना चाहिए तथा पकवानों के साथ श्रीकृष्ण प्रतिमा की भी पूजा करनी चाहिए !
इसके बाद पकवान जैसे गुड़ से बनी खीर, पुरी, चने की दाल और गुड़ का भोग लगाकर गाय को खिलाना चाहिए तथा पूजा के पश्चात परिवार के सभी सदस्यों को भी भोग लगे हुए प्रसाद को ही सबसे पहले खाना चाहिए !
गोवर्धन पूजा का महत्त्व
मान्यता है कि इस दिन श्रीकृष्ण ने गोवर्धन पर्वत की सहायता से इंद्र का घमंड चूर किया था तथा स्वयं गोवर्धन पर्वत ने ब्रजवासियों को अपने दर्शन देकर छप्पन भोग द्वारा उनकी भूख मिटायी थी ! इस प्रकार गोवर्धन पूजा करने से घर में दरिद्रता का वास नहीं होता तथा घर हमेंशा धन और अन्न से भरा रहता है !

The Sacred Katha of Govardhan Puja
Once upon a time, Devraj Indra became filled with pride over his immense powers. To humble his arrogance, Bhagwan Krishna enacted a divine Leela. One day, when He saw all the residents of Braj, including His mother, Maa Yashoda, preparing for a Puja, He innocently asked, “Maiya, for whom are all of you preparing this Puja?” His mother then explained to Him that they were preparing to worship Indra Dev.
Then Bhagwan Krishna asked, “Maiya, why do we all worship Indra?” His mother explained that ‘Indra showers rain, which brings us food grains and grass for our cows.’ Upon hearing this, Shri Krishna immediately said, “Maiya, our cows graze on the Govardhan Parvat for their food. Therefore, it is Govardhan Parvat that should be worshipped by us. Indra Dev is arrogant; he never grants us his divine darshan.”
Following Shri Krishna’s words, all the residents of Braj worshipped Govardhan Parvat instead of Indra Dev. Enraged by this, Indra Dev unleashed a torrential downpour. As the rains began to take the form of a devastating flood, all the residents of Braj started to blame Bhagwan Krishna. It was then that Shri Krishna, to protect the people from the relentless rain, lifted the mighty Govardhan Parvat upon His little finger.
He then asked everyone, along with their cows, to take shelter beneath the mountain. This only further infuriated Indra Dev, who intensified the speed of the rain. To completely shatter Indra’s pride, Shri Krishna then commanded His Sudarshan Chakra to remain above the mountain and control the intensity of the rain, and asked Sheshnag to form a barrier, preventing water from reaching the mountain.
Indra Dev continued his torrential downpour day and night. After a long time had passed, he realized that Krishna was no ordinary human being. He then went to Brahma Ji, where he learned that Shri Krishna was none other than the incarnation of Shri Hari Vishnu Himself. Upon hearing this, he immediately approached Shri Krishna and earnestly begged for forgiveness. Thereafter, Devraj Indra performed Puja to Shri Krishna and offered Him Bhog. Since that day, the tradition of Govardhan Puja has been established. It is believed that by worshipping Govardhan Parvat and cows on this day, Bhagwan Krishna is greatly pleased.
The Sacred Rituals of Govardhan Puja
On this day, after taking an early morning bath, one should create a replica of Govardhan Parvat using cow dung at the Puja place! With utmost devotion, offer Akshat, Chandan, Dhoop, flowers, and other sacred items to this mountain replica! Light a Diya in front of the mountain and perform Puja to an idol of Shri Krishna, along with various delicious dishes!
Thereafter, offer dishes like Kheer made with jaggery, Puri, Chana Dal, and jaggery as Bhog, and feed it to a cow. After the Puja, all family members should first partake of this sacred Prasad!
The Spiritual Significance of Govardhan Puja
It is believed that on this day, Shri Krishna, with the help of Govardhan Parvat, humbled Indra’s pride. Furthermore, Govardhan Parvat itself granted divine darshan to the residents of Braj and appeased their hunger with a grand offering of Chhappan Bhog! Thus, by performing Govardhan Puja, poverty does not reside in the home, and the household always remains filled with wealth and grain!
