तिथि व महिमा: फाल्गुन मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी को “विजया एकादशी” कहा जाता है। इस व्रत का फल हर प्रकार की सफलता, रुकावटों का निवारण और दैवी विजय के रूप में मिलता है।
अर्जुन का प्रश्न
अर्जुन ने श्रीकृष्ण से निवेदन किया — “हे प्रभो! जया एकादशी की कथा आपने सुना दी, अब कृपा कर फाल्गुन कृष्ण की एकादशी का नाम, पूजन-विधि और कथा भी बताइए।”
श्रीकृष्ण का उत्तर
श्रीकृष्ण बोले — “हे पार्थ! यह जो एकादशी आती है, वह ‘विजया एकादशी’ है। इसका व्रत करने से पूर्वजन्म के पाप भी क्षीण होते हैं और वर्तमान जीवन के कार्य भी सिद्ध हो जाते हैं। इसका माहात्म्य स्वयं ब्रह्माजी ने नारद को सुनाया था।”
नारद–ब्रह्मा संवाद
देवर्षि नारद ने पूछा — “हे प्रभो! इस विजया एकादशी का विधान और इसका फल क्या है?”
ब्रह्माजी ने कहा — “हे पुत्र! यह ऐसी एकादशी है जिसे मैंने बहुत कम को बताया है। ‘विजया’ नाम ही बताता है कि यह करने वाले को विजय देती है। जो व्यक्ति या राजा किसी अभियान पर निकल रहा हो, उसे यह व्रत अवश्य करना चाहिए।”
राम–वनवास का प्रसंग
ब्रह्माजी ने कहा — “जब श्रीरामचन्द्र जी वनवास में थे और रावण माता सीता का हरण कर ले गया था, तब श्रीराम जी सीता-खोज में लक्ष्मण सहित जंगलों में भटके, जटायु से समाचार लिया, फिर आगे चलकर सुग्रीव से मित्रता की, बाली-वध हुआ और हनुमान जी ने लंका जाकर माता सीता का पता लगाया।”
फिर श्रीराम ने वानर और भालुओं की विशाल सेना के साथ लंका की ओर प्रस्थान किया। जब सब समुद्र-तट पर पहुँचे तो श्रीराम जी ने कहा — “यह समुद्र तो भयंकर जीवों से भरा है, इसे कैसे पार किया जाए?”
लक्ष्मण जी ने निवेदन किया — “प्रभो! पास ही कुमारी-द्वीप में वकदाल्भ्य मुनि का आश्रम है, वे अनेक कल्पों के रहस्य के जानकार हैं, उनसे उपाय पूछ लें।”
वकदाल्भ्य मुनि का उपाय
श्रीराम वहाँ गये, ऋषि को प्रणाम किया। मुनि ने पूछा — “हे राम! किस हेतु से पधारे?”
भगवान राम ने कहा — “मैं लंका जा रहा हूँ, समुद्र मार्ग रोक रहा है। ऐसा उपाय बताइए जिससे हम पार जा सकें और युद्ध में विजय भी हो।”
ऋषि ने कहा — “हे रघुनन्दन! फाल्गुन कृष्ण की ‘विजया एकादशी’ का व्रत करिए। इसके प्रभाव से समुद्र भी मार्ग देगा और युद्ध में भी निश्चय ही विजय होगी।”
विजया एकादशी की संक्षिप्त विधि
1. दशमी को तैयारी: व्रत से एक दिन पहले स्वर्ण, चाँदी, ताँबे या मिट्टी का कलश बनाकर उसे स्वच्छ जल से भरें। 2. स्थापना: कलश के नीचे सात प्रकार के अनाज (सतनजा) बिछाएँ, ऊपर जौ रखें और कलश पर पंच-पल्लव रखकर उसी के पास भगवान विष्णु की प्रतिमा (स्वर्ण न हो तो अन्य धातु) स्थापित करें। 3. एकादशी के दिन: स्नान, आचमन और संकल्प के बाद भगवान विष्णु का धूप, दीप, नैवेद्य, फल, नारियल से पूजन करें। दिन-भर निराहार या फलाहार रहकर उसी के समीप जप-कीर्तन करें। 4. रात्रि जागरण: रात्रि को भगवान के समीप भजन, रामायण/भागवत/विष्णु-कथा श्रवण करते हुए जागें। 5. द्वादशी को दान: दूसरे दिन प्रातः स्नान करके वही पूजित कलश, अनाज सहित, यथाशक्ति ब्राह्मण को दान देकर व्रत का पारण करें।
व्रत का फल
ऋषि ने आश्वासन दिया — “हे राम! यदि आप इस विधि से व्रत करेंगे और सेनापतियों को भी साथ में करवाएँगे, तो आपकी विजय निश्चित है।”
श्रीराम ने ऐसा ही किया और इस व्रत के प्रभाव से समुद्र-सेतु का मार्ग मिला, सेना पार हुई और आगे चलकर लंका-विजय प्राप्त हुई।
महिमा
• यह व्रत रुके हुए कार्यों को गतिकर करता है।
• यात्रा, युद्ध, न्याय, परीक्षा या किसी बड़े उपक्रम से पहले किया जाए तो शुभ होता है।
• इसका माहात्म्य सुनना या सुनाना वाजपेय यज्ञ के समान फलदायक कहा गया है।
कथा-सार
• भगवान स्वयं अवतार में होते हुए भी व्रत-विधान का पालन करते हैं — ताकि जीवों को आचरण का मार्ग दिखे।
• विजय केवल पराक्रम से नहीं, ईश्वर-समर्पित नियम से भी मिलती है।
• जो व्यक्ति “मुझे यह काम हर हाल में सिद्ध करना है” ऐसी भावना से विजया एकादशी करे, उसका कार्य दैवी प्रेरणा से पूर्ण हो जाता है।

The Sacred Katha of Maharishi Vakadalbhya and Bhagwan Shri Ram
Date and Significance: The Ekadashi falling in the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) of the month of Phalguna is known as “Vijaya Ekadashi.” The observance of this Vrat bestows success in all endeavors, removes obstacles, and grants divine victory.
Arjun’s Inquiry to Shri Krishna
Arjun humbly requested Shri Krishna, “O Prabhu! You have already narrated the sacred Katha of Jaya Ekadashi. Now, please be gracious enough to tell me the name, Puja-Vidhi, and Katha of the Ekadashi that falls in the Krishna Paksha of Phalguna.”
Bhagwan Shri Krishna Reveals
Shri Krishna replied, “O Partha! The Ekadashi that comes now is known as ‘Vijaya Ekadashi.’ Observing this Vrat diminishes the sins of past lives and ensures the success of endeavors in the present life. Its profound glory was narrated by Brahmaji Himself to Narada.”
The Divine Dialogue Between Narada and Brahmaji
Devrishi Narada inquired, “O Prabhu! What is the prescribed method and the fruit of observing this Vijaya Ekadashi?”
Brahmaji replied, “O my son! This is an Ekadashi whose profound secret I have revealed to very few. Its very name, ‘Vijaya’ (victory), signifies that it bestows triumph upon its observer. Any person or king embarking on an important endeavor should definitely observe this Vrat.”
The Episode of Shri Ram’s Exile
Brahmaji continued, “When Shri Ramachandra ji was in exile and Ravana had abducted Mata Sita, Shri Ram ji, along with Lakshman, wandered through the forests in search of Sita. They received news from Jatayu, then later befriended Sugriva, which led to the slaying of Vali. Thereafter, Hanuman ji journeyed to Lanka and located Mata Sita.”
Then, Shri Ram, accompanied by a vast army of Vanaras and bears, set forth towards Lanka. When they all reached the seashore, Shri Ram ji pondered, “This ocean is filled with fearsome creatures; how can we cross it?”
Lakshman ji humbly submitted, “Prabhu! Nearby, on Kumari-Dweep, resides Maharishi Vakadalbhya. He is aware of the secrets of many Kalpas. We should seek his counsel for a solution.”
Maharishi Vakadalbhya’s Divine Counsel
Shri Ram went there and offered His obeisances to the Rishi. The Muni inquired, “O Ram! For what purpose have you graced my ashram?”
Bhagwan Ram replied, “I am on my way to Lanka, but the ocean blocks our path. Please advise me on a way to cross it and also attain victory in the impending war.”
The Rishi said, “O Raghunandan! Observe the ‘Vijaya Ekadashi’ Vrat, which falls in the Krishna Paksha of Phalguna. By its divine influence, the ocean will surely yield a path, and you will undoubtedly achieve victory in battle.”
The Concise Method for Vijaya Ekadashi Vrat
1. Preparation on Dashami: One day before the Vrat, prepare a Kalash made of gold, silver, copper, or clay, and fill it with pure water. 2. Installation: Place seven types of grains (Satanja) beneath the Kalash, put barley on top, and adorn the Kalash with Panch-Pallav (five leaves). Near it, install an idol of Bhagwan Vishnu (if not gold, then of another metal). 3. On Ekadashi: After taking a sacred bath, performing Aachaman, and making a Sankalp, worship Bhagwan Vishnu with Dhoop (incense), Deep (lamp), Naivedya (offerings), fruits, and coconut. Remain without food (Nirahar) or subsist on Phalahar throughout the day, engaging in Japa and Kirtan near the deity. 4. Night Vigil: Stay awake during the night, performing Bhajans, and listening to the sacred Kathas from Ramayana, Bhagavata, or Vishnu Puranas near Bhagwan. 5. Donation on Dwadashi: The next morning, after taking a bath, donate the worshipped Kalash along with the grains to a Brahmin according to one’s capacity, and then break the Vrat (Parana).
The Blessings of Observing this Vrat
The Rishi assured, “O Ram! If you observe this Vrat according to this method and ensure your commanders also do so, your victory is certain.”
Shri Ram followed the instructions precisely, and by the divine influence of this Vrat, a path was formed across the ocean (the Setu), the army crossed, and subsequently, victory over Lanka was achieved.
The Glory of Vijaya Ekadashi
• This Vrat brings momentum to stalled endeavors. • Observing it before a journey, war, legal matter, examination, or any significant undertaking is considered highly auspicious. • Merely listening to or narrating its glory is said to bestow merits equivalent to performing a Vajapeya Yajna.
Essence of this Sacred Narrative
• Even Bhagwan Himself, in His incarnated form, observes the prescribed Vrat-Vidhan — to show the path of righteous conduct to all beings. • Victory is attained not merely through valor, but also through devotion and adherence to divine principles. • Any person who observes Vijaya Ekadashi with the heartfelt intention, “I must accomplish this task at all costs,” will find their endeavor fulfilled through divine inspiration.
