लोकप्रचलित धार्मिक कथा के अनुसार, एक समय भगवान भूतनाथ महादेव माता पार्वती के साथ मृत्युलोक में भ्रमण कर रहे थे। भ्रमण करते हुए वे विदर्भ देश की अमरावती नामक सुन्दर नगरी में पहुँचे। वह नगरी धन-धान्य, सुख-समृद्धि और सभी प्रकार के वैभव से सम्पन्न थी। वहाँ के राजा ने भगवान शिव की आराधना के लिए एक अत्यन्त भव्य और सुन्दर शिव मंदिर का निर्माण कराया था।
भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती को वह पवित्र स्थान बहुत प्रिय लगा, इसलिए वे कुछ समय के लिए उसी मंदिर में निवास करने लगे। एक दिन माता पार्वती ने भगवान शिव से कहा, “हे नाथ! आज मेरा मन आपके साथ चौसर खेलने का हो रहा है।” भगवान शिव ने माता पार्वती का आग्रह स्वीकार कर लिया और दोनों चौसर खेलने लगे।
मंदिर के पुजारी को माता पार्वती का श्राप
उसी समय मंदिर का ब्राह्मण पुजारी भगवान शिव की पूजा करने के लिए वहाँ आया। माता पार्वती ने पुजारी को देखकर पूछा, “हे ब्राह्मणदेव! बताइए, इस चौसर के खेल में हम दोनों में से किसकी विजय होगी?”
पुजारी भगवान शिव का अनन्य भक्त था। उसने खेल का परिणाम जाने बिना ही उत्तर दे दिया, “माता! इस खेल में भगवान महादेव की ही विजय होगी।”
कुछ समय बाद चौसर का खेल समाप्त हुआ, लेकिन भगवान शिव के स्थान पर माता पार्वती की विजय हुई। अपनी भविष्यवाणी के विपरीत परिणाम देखकर भी पुजारी मौन रहा। माता पार्वती को लगा कि पुजारी ने असत्य कहा है। उन्होंने क्रोधित होकर उसे कोढ़ से पीड़ित होने का श्राप दे दिया।
भगवान शिव ने माता पार्वती को समझाया कि पुजारी ने जानबूझकर असत्य नहीं कहा था। उसने केवल अपने आराध्य भगवान शिव के प्रति श्रद्धा के कारण ऐसा उत्तर दिया था। फिर भी माता पार्वती के श्राप के प्रभाव से पुजारी का शरीर कोढ़ से ग्रस्त हो गया। उसके शरीर पर घाव हो गए और वह अत्यन्त कष्टपूर्ण जीवन व्यतीत करने लगा।
अप्सराओं ने बताया सोलह सोमवार व्रत
काफी समय बीत जाने के बाद एक दिन स्वर्गलोक की कुछ अप्सराएँ भगवान शिव की पूजा करने के लिए उसी मंदिर में आईं। उन्होंने मंदिर के पुजारी को रोग से पीड़ित देखा तो उनके हृदय में दया उत्पन्न हुई। उन्होंने पुजारी से पूछा, “हे ब्राह्मणदेव! आप इतने भयंकर रोग से किस कारण पीड़ित हैं? आपने ऐसा कौन-सा अपराध किया है?”
पुजारी ने अप्सराओं को भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती के चौसर खेलने से लेकर श्राप मिलने तक की पूरी घटना सुना दी। उसकी दुःखभरी बात सुनकर अप्सराओं ने उसे धैर्य दिया और कहा, “हे ब्राह्मणदेव! आप श्रद्धापूर्वक सोलह सोमवार का व्रत कीजिए। भगवान शिव की कृपा से आपका रोग अवश्य दूर होगा।”
पुजारी ने हाथ जोड़कर पूछा, “हे देवियो! कृपा करके मुझे इस व्रत की विधि भी बताइए, जिससे मैं नियमपूर्वक भगवान शिव की आराधना कर सकूँ।”
अप्सराओं ने कहा, “प्रत्येक सोमवार प्रातःकाल स्नान करके स्वच्छ वस्त्र धारण करें और श्रद्धापूर्वक व्रत का संकल्प लें। प्रदोष काल में भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती की चन्दन, अक्षत, पुष्प, बिल्वपत्र, धूप और दीप से पूजा करें। गेहूँ के आटे, घी और गुड़ से प्रसाद तैयार करके भगवान शिव को अर्पित करें। प्रसाद को श्रद्धालुओं में बाँटें और स्वयं भी ग्रहण करें।”
अप्सराओं ने आगे कहा, “इसी प्रकार निरन्तर सोलह सोमवार तक व्रत और पूजा करें। सत्रहवें सोमवार को विशेष पूजा करके व्रत का उद्यापन करें, भगवान शिव को चूरमे अथवा आटे से बने प्रसाद का भोग लगाएँ और परिवार तथा श्रद्धालुओं में प्रसाद वितरित करें। श्रद्धा और नियमपूर्वक यह व्रत करने से भगवान शिव भक्त के दुःख दूर करते हैं और उसकी उचित मनोकामनाएँ पूर्ण करते हैं।”
इतना कहकर अप्सराएँ स्वर्गलोक लौट गईं। पुजारी ने उनके बताए अनुसार सोलह सोमवार का व्रत आरम्भ किया। उसने प्रत्येक सोमवार श्रद्धापूर्वक भगवान शिव की पूजा की, कथा सुनी और प्रसाद वितरित किया। सोलह सोमवार पूरे होने पर उसने सत्रहवें सोमवार को विधिपूर्वक उद्यापन किया।
भगवान शिव की कृपा से पुजारी का कोढ़ पूरी तरह दूर हो गया। उसका शरीर पुनः स्वस्थ हो गया और वह पहले की तरह भगवान शिव की सेवा तथा मंदिर में पूजा करने लगा।
माता पार्वती ने किया सोलह सोमवार व्रत
कुछ समय बाद भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती पुनः उसी मंदिर में आए। माता पार्वती ने पुजारी को पूर्णतः स्वस्थ देखा तो उन्हें बहुत आश्चर्य हुआ। उन्होंने पुजारी से पूछा, “ब्राह्मणदेव! मेरे श्राप के कारण तुम्हारा शरीर कोढ़ से ग्रस्त हो गया था। तुम इस भयंकर रोग से कैसे मुक्त हुए?”
पुजारी ने हाथ जोड़कर माता पार्वती को प्रणाम किया और सोलह सोमवार व्रत की पूरी विधि तथा महिमा बताई। व्रत की महिमा सुनकर माता पार्वती अत्यन्त प्रसन्न हुईं। उस समय उनके पुत्र भगवान कार्तिकेय किसी कारण उनसे रुष्ट होकर दूर चले गए थे। माता पार्वती ने पुत्र से पुनर्मिलन की कामना से सोलह सोमवार का व्रत किया।
व्रत के पुण्य प्रभाव और भगवान शिव की कृपा से भगवान कार्तिकेय का मन परिवर्तित हुआ। वे माता पार्वती के पास लौट आए और पहले की तरह उनका सम्मान तथा आज्ञापालन करने लगे।
भगवान कार्तिकेय ने माता पार्वती से पूछा, “हे माता! आपने ऐसा कौन-सा उपाय किया, जिसके प्रभाव से मेरा मन पुनः आपके चरणों में लग गया और मैं आपके पास लौट आया?”
माता पार्वती ने उन्हें सोलह सोमवार व्रत की महिमा और पूरी विधि बताई। भगवान कार्तिकेय यह सुनकर बहुत प्रसन्न हुए।
भगवान कार्तिकेय को मिला बिछड़ा हुआ मित्र
भगवान कार्तिकेय का एक प्रिय ब्राह्मण मित्र बहुत समय से उनसे दूर था। अपने बिछड़े मित्र से पुनः मिलने की इच्छा से भगवान कार्तिकेय ने भी सोलह सोमवार का व्रत किया। व्रत पूर्ण होने पर उनका मित्र सकुशल उनके पास लौट आया।
मित्र ने आश्चर्यपूर्वक पूछा, “हे कार्तिकेय! ऐसा कौन-सा पुण्य अथवा उपाय हुआ, जिसके कारण मैं अचानक आपके पास लौट आया?”
भगवान कार्तिकेय ने उसे सोलह सोमवार व्रत की महिमा बताई और कहा कि श्रद्धा तथा नियम से इस व्रत को करने पर भगवान शिव भक्त की उचित मनोकामना पूर्ण करते हैं।
ब्राह्मण युवक का राजकुमारी से विवाह
कार्तिकेय जी के ब्राह्मण मित्र ने विवाह की इच्छा से सोलह सोमवार का व्रत करने का संकल्प लिया। उसने लगातार सोलह सोमवार भगवान शिव की श्रद्धापूर्वक पूजा की और सत्रहवें सोमवार को व्रत का उद्यापन किया।
कुछ समय बाद वह ब्राह्मण युवक किसी दूसरे राज्य में पहुँचा। वहाँ के राजा ने अपनी पुत्री के विवाह के लिए स्वयंवर का आयोजन किया था। स्वयंवर में अनेक देशों के राजा और राजकुमार उपस्थित हुए थे।
राजा ने घोषणा की थी कि राजमहल की हथिनी जिसके गले में वरमाला डालेगी, उसी के साथ राजकुमारी का विवाह किया जाएगा। ब्राह्मण युवक भी स्वयंवर देखने के लिए एक ओर जाकर बैठ गया।
हथिनी वरमाला लेकर सभा में घूमती हुई अनेक राजाओं और राजकुमारों के पास से निकली, लेकिन उसने किसी के गले में वरमाला नहीं डाली। अन्ततः वह ब्राह्मण युवक के पास पहुँची और उसने वरमाला उसके गले में डाल दी।
राजा ने अपनी प्रतिज्ञा का पालन करते हुए अपनी पुत्री का विवाह उस ब्राह्मण युवक के साथ विधिपूर्वक कर दिया। विवाह के बाद दोनों सुख और प्रेमपूर्वक जीवन व्यतीत करने लगे।
एक दिन राजकुमारी ने अपने पति से पूछा, “हे स्वामी! आपने ऐसा कौन-सा पुण्य किया था, जिसके फलस्वरूप राजाओं और राजकुमारों को छोड़कर हथिनी ने आपके गले में वरमाला डाल दी और मेरा विवाह आपके साथ हुआ?”
ब्राह्मण युवक ने उत्तर दिया, “हे प्रिये! मैंने भगवान कार्तिकेय से सोलह सोमवार व्रत की महिमा सुनकर श्रद्धापूर्वक यह व्रत किया था। भगवान शिव की कृपा से ही तुम मुझे पत्नी के रूप में प्राप्त हुई हो।”
राजकुमारी को हुई पुत्र की प्राप्ति
सोलह सोमवार व्रत की महिमा सुनकर राजकुमारी ने भी पुत्र-प्राप्ति की कामना से यह व्रत किया। उसने नियमपूर्वक सोलह सोमवार तक भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती की आराधना की। भगवान शिव की कृपा से कुछ समय बाद उसे एक सुन्दर, तेजस्वी, बुद्धिमान और सदाचारी पुत्र की प्राप्ति हुई।
जब वह पुत्र बड़ा हुआ तो उसने अपनी माता से पूछा, “हे माता! आपने ऐसा कौन-सा पुण्य अथवा व्रत किया था, जिसके फलस्वरूप मैं आपके पुत्र के रूप में जन्मा?”
माता ने उसे सोलह सोमवार व्रत की कथा और महिमा सुनाई। व्रत की महिमा जानकर उस युवक ने राज्य और प्रजा की सेवा करने का अवसर प्राप्त करने की कामना से सोलह सोमवार का व्रत किया।
ब्राह्मण पुत्र को मिला राजपाट
उसी समय एक राज्य का राजा अपनी पुत्री के लिए योग्य वर की खोज कर रहा था। राजा का कोई पुत्र नहीं था। उसके सेवकों और मंत्रियों ने ब्राह्मण पुत्र के गुण, ज्ञान और सदाचार की प्रशंसा राजा के सामने की।
राजा ने ब्राह्मण पुत्र को अपनी पुत्री के लिए योग्य समझा और दोनों का विवाह विधिपूर्वक कर दिया। कुछ समय बाद राजा का देहान्त हो गया। राजा का कोई पुत्र न होने के कारण ब्राह्मण पुत्र को राज्य की गद्दी प्राप्त हुई। वह धर्म और न्याय के अनुसार राज्य का संचालन करने लगा।
राजपाट प्राप्त होने के बाद भी उसने भगवान शिव की आराधना और सोमवार का व्रत नहीं छोड़ा। वह अपनी पत्नी के साथ प्रत्येक वर्ष श्रद्धापूर्वक सोलह सोमवार का व्रत करता था।
रानी ने की भगवान शिव की पूजा की उपेक्षा
एक बार सोलह सोमवार पूरे होने पर सत्रहवें सोमवार को राजा ने विशेष पूजा और उद्यापन का आयोजन किया। उसने अपनी पत्नी से कहा, “आज तुम स्वयं पूजन-सामग्री लेकर मेरे साथ शिव मंदिर चलना और श्रद्धापूर्वक भगवान शिव की पूजा में सम्मिलित होना।”
लेकिन रानी ने राजा की आज्ञा का सम्मान नहीं किया। उसने स्वयं मंदिर जाने के स्थान पर अपनी दासियों के हाथ पूजन-सामग्री भेज दी। राजा ने मंदिर में अकेले ही भगवान शिव की पूजा और उद्यापन सम्पन्न किया।
पूजा समाप्त होने पर आकाशवाणी हुई, “हे राजन्! तुम्हारी पत्नी ने भगवान शिव की पूजा का अनादर किया है। उसे अपने महल से दूर कर दो, अन्यथा तुम्हारे राज्य और परिवार पर संकट आ सकता है।”
आकाशवाणी सुनकर राजा अत्यन्त दुःखी और आश्चर्यचकित हुआ। उसने अपने मंत्रियों और सभासदों को सारी बात बताई। सभी ने कहा, “महाराज! जिस रानी के कारण आपको राज्य प्राप्त हुआ, उसका त्याग करना उचित नहीं लगता।”
फिर भी राजा ने इसे भगवान शिव की आज्ञा मानते हुए भारी मन से रानी को महल से बाहर कर दिया।
रानी पर आईं अनेक विपत्तियाँ
महल से निकाले जाने के बाद रानी भूखी-प्यासी भटकते हुए एक अनजान नगर में पहुँची। वहाँ उसने एक वृद्ध महिला को सूत और धागे की गठरी लेकर बाजार जाते देखा। वृद्ध महिला ने रानी की दयनीय अवस्था देखकर कहा, “बेटी! यदि तुम मेरी सहायता करोगी तो मैं तुम्हें भोजन दे दूँगी।”
रानी ने वृद्ध महिला की सूत की गठरी अपने सिर पर रख ली। वे कुछ ही दूर चली थीं कि अचानक तेज आँधी आ गई और सूत की पूरी गठरी उड़ गई। वृद्ध महिला ने रानी को दुर्भाग्यशाली समझकर फटकारा और अपने पास से भगा दिया।
वहाँ से रानी एक तेली के घर पहुँची। जैसे ही उसने वहाँ प्रवेश किया, तेल से भरे हुए कई घड़े टूट गए और सारा तेल भूमि पर बह गया। तेली ने भी रानी को अपशकुनी समझकर घर से निकाल दिया।
भूख और प्यास से व्याकुल रानी एक नदी के पास पहुँची, लेकिन उसके वहाँ पहुँचते ही नदी का जल सूख गया। इसके बाद वह एक सरोवर के पास गई। जैसे ही उसने जल को स्पर्श किया, उसमें कीड़े पड़ गए और जल दूषित हो गया। अत्यधिक प्यास के कारण रानी ने उसी जल को पी लिया।
थककर वह एक हरे-भरे वृक्ष के नीचे विश्राम करने बैठी, लेकिन उसके बैठते ही वृक्ष के पत्ते झड़ गए और वह सूखने लगा। रानी जिस भी वृक्ष के नीचे जाती, उसकी हरियाली नष्ट होने लगती।
दयालु पुजारी ने रानी को दिया आश्रय
उस क्षेत्र के लोगों ने यह सब देखा तो वे रानी को एक मंदिर के दयालु पुजारी के पास ले गए। पुजारी ने रानी की दुःखभरी अवस्था देखकर कहा, “बेटी! तुम किसी कुलीन परिवार की प्रतीत होती हो और किसी बड़े संकट के कारण यहाँ पहुँची हो। तुम मेरे आश्रम में मेरी पुत्री के समान रहो। यहाँ तुम्हें किसी बात की चिन्ता नहीं करनी होगी।”
रानी आश्रम में रहने लगी, लेकिन उसके दुर्भाग्य का प्रभाव वहाँ भी दिखाई देने लगा। वह जिस भोजन को बनाती, उसमें कीड़े पड़ जाते। वह जो जल भरकर लाती, वह दूषित हो जाता।
पुजारी ने आश्चर्यपूर्वक पूछा, “बेटी! तुमसे ऐसा कौन-सा अपराध हुआ है, जिसके कारण तुम्हें इतने कष्ट सहने पड़ रहे हैं?”
रानी ने रोते हुए बताया, “मेरे पति ने मुझे सत्रहवें सोमवार की विशेष पूजा में स्वयं उपस्थित होने के लिए कहा था। मैंने उनकी आज्ञा नहीं मानी और अपनी दासियों के हाथ पूजन-सामग्री भेज दी। भगवान शिव की पूजा की उपेक्षा के कारण मुझे महल से निकाल दिया गया और तभी से मेरे ऊपर एक के बाद एक विपत्तियाँ आ रही हैं।”
पुजारी ने भगवान शिव का ध्यान किया और कहा, “बेटी! तुम अपनी भूल स्वीकार करके श्रद्धा और विनम्रता के साथ सोलह सोमवार का व्रत करो। भगवान शिव अत्यन्त दयालु और भक्तवत्सल हैं। वे तुम्हारे अपराध को क्षमा करके तुम्हारे कष्ट अवश्य दूर करेंगे।”
रानी ने किया सोलह सोमवार व्रत
रानी ने पुजारी के मार्गदर्शन में सोलह सोमवार का व्रत आरम्भ किया। वह प्रत्येक सोमवार स्नान करके स्वच्छ वस्त्र धारण करती, भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती की पूजा करती, व्रत कथा सुनती और अपनी भूल के लिए क्षमा माँगती।
सोलह सोमवार पूरे होने पर उसने सत्रहवें सोमवार को श्रद्धापूर्वक व्रत का उद्यापन किया। भगवान शिव की कृपा से उसके सभी दोष और कष्ट दूर होने लगे। आश्रम में बनने वाला भोजन और लाया गया जल भी पहले की तरह शुद्ध रहने लगा।
उसी समय राजा के मन में अपनी पत्नी की स्मृति जागी। उसे अपने निर्णय पर दुःख हुआ और उसने सेवकों को आदेश दिया कि वे पूरे राज्य और आसपास के क्षेत्रों में रानी की खोज करें।
खोज करते हुए राजा के सेवक उस पुजारी के आश्रम में पहुँचे और उन्होंने रानी को पहचान लिया। उन्होंने पुजारी से कहा, “यह हमारे राजा की पत्नी हैं। हमें इन्हें अपने साथ राजमहल ले जाने की आज्ञा दीजिए।”
पुजारी ने कहा, “तुम अपने राजा से कहो कि यदि वे वास्तव में अपनी पत्नी को सम्मानपूर्वक वापस ले जाना चाहते हैं, तो स्वयं यहाँ आकर इन्हें स्वीकार करें।”
राजा और रानी का पुनर्मिलन
सेवकों ने लौटकर राजा को सारी बात बताई। राजा स्वयं पुजारी के आश्रम पहुँचा और विनम्रतापूर्वक बोला, “हे महात्मन्! यह मेरी पत्नी है। भगवान शिव की आज्ञा समझकर मैंने इसका त्याग किया था। अब महादेव की कृपा से ही मुझे इसकी स्मृति हुई है और मैं इसे सम्मानपूर्वक वापस लेने आया हूँ। कृपा करके इसे मेरे साथ जाने की आज्ञा प्रदान करें।”
पुजारी ने रानी को राजा के साथ जाने की अनुमति और आशीर्वाद दिया। राजा अपनी पत्नी को आदरपूर्वक राजमहल लेकर आया। राजा और रानी के लौटने पर प्रजा ने पूरे नगर को सजाया, मंगलगीत गाए और उनका भव्य स्वागत किया।
इसके बाद राजा और रानी ने श्रद्धा, विनम्रता और नियमपूर्वक भगवान शिव की आराधना की। वे प्रत्येक वर्ष सोलह सोमवार का व्रत करते और जरूरतमन्द लोगों को भोजन तथा दान देते हुए सुखपूर्वक जीवन व्यतीत करने लगे।
सोलह सोमवार व्रत कथा का संदेश
सोलह सोमवार व्रत की यह कथा भगवान शिव के प्रति श्रद्धा, नियमित साधना, विनम्रता और अपने संकल्प के पालन का महत्त्व समझाती है। कथा में पुजारी, माता पार्वती, भगवान कार्तिकेय, ब्राह्मण युवक, राजकुमारी और रानी—सभी ने अलग-अलग मनोकामनाओं और परिस्थितियों में भगवान शिव की शरण ग्रहण की।
कथा का मूल भाव यह है कि व्रत केवल सांसारिक इच्छा की पूर्ति का साधन नहीं, बल्कि आत्म-संयम, पश्चात्ताप, सेवा और ईश्वर के प्रति समर्पण की साधना है। मनुष्य से भूल हो सकती है, लेकिन सच्चे हृदय से अपनी भूल स्वीकार करके धर्म और भक्ति के मार्ग पर लौटने से जीवन में सकारात्मक परिवर्तन आ सकता है।
सोलह सोमवार व्रत की फलश्रुति
धार्मिक मान्यता के अनुसार, जो श्रद्धालु सच्चे मन, संयम और नियम के साथ सोलह सोमवार व्रत करता है तथा भगवान शिव की इस कथा का पाठ अथवा श्रवण करता है, उस पर भगवान शिव और माता पार्वती की कृपा बनी रहती है। भक्त अपनी उचित मनोकामनाओं की पूर्ति, पारिवारिक शान्ति, सद्बुद्धि और आध्यात्मिक उन्नति के लिए यह व्रत करते हैं।
हे देवाधिदेव महादेव! हमारे द्वारा जाने-अनजाने में हुई भूलों को क्षमा करें। हमारे हृदय से अहंकार, क्रोध, भय और नकारात्मकता को दूर करें। हमें सत्य, करुणा, धर्म और सदाचार के मार्ग पर चलने की शक्ति प्रदान करें।
हे माता पार्वती! हमारे परिवार में प्रेम, शान्ति और सद्भाव बनाए रखें। हमारी उचित मनोकामनाएँ पूर्ण करें और हमें भगवान शिव के श्रीचरणों में अटल श्रद्धा तथा भक्ति प्रदान करें।
According to the traditionally narrated sacred story, Lord Bhootnath Mahadeva was once travelling through the mortal world with Goddess Parvati. During their journey, They arrived in the beautiful city of Amaravati in the region of Vidarbha. The city was blessed with prosperity, abundance and every form of worldly comfort. The king of that city had constructed a magnificent temple dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva.
Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati found the sacred place deeply pleasing and decided to stay in the temple for some time. One day, Goddess Parvati said to Lord Shiva, “O Lord, today I wish to play a game of Chaupar with You.” Lord Shiva lovingly accepted Her request, and They began playing the game.
Goddess Parvati Curses the Temple Priest
At that moment, the Brahmin priest of the temple arrived to perform the worship of Lord Shiva. Seeing him, Goddess Parvati asked, “O revered Brahmin, please tell Me—which one of us will win this game of Chaupar?”
The priest was a devoted worshipper of Lord Shiva. Without knowing the outcome of the game, he replied, “O Divine Mother, Lord Mahadeva will certainly be victorious.”
After some time, the game ended, but instead of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati emerged victorious. The priest remained silent when the result proved his prediction wrong. Goddess Parvati believed that he had knowingly spoken an untruth. In anger, She cursed him to suffer from leprosy.
Lord Shiva explained to Goddess Parvati that the priest had not intentionally spoken falsely. He had answered only because of his deep devotion towards Lord Shiva. Nevertheless, due to the effect of Goddess Parvati’s curse, the priest’s body became afflicted with a severe disease. Painful sores appeared upon his body, and he began living a life filled with great suffering.

A long time passed. One day, several celestial maidens came from the heavenly realm to worship Lord Shiva in the same temple. When they saw the priest suffering from the terrible disease, their hearts were filled with compassion.
They asked him, “O revered Brahmin, why are you suffering from such a painful illness? What offence did you commit that brought this condition upon you?”
The priest narrated the entire incident, beginning with the game of Chaupar between Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and ending with the curse he had received. After listening to his sorrowful account, the celestial maidens consoled him and said, “O Brahmin, observe the Solah Somvar Vrat with sincere devotion. By the grace of Lord Shiva, you will certainly be freed from this disease.”
The priest folded his hands and asked, “O divine maidens, please explain the complete procedure of this sacred Vrat so that I may worship Lord Shiva properly and with discipline.”
The celestial maidens said, “On every Monday, wake up early, bathe and wear clean clothes. Take a sincere Sankalpa to observe the fast. During Pradosh Kaal, worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with sandalwood paste, Akshat, flowers, Bilva leaves, incense and a lamp.”
“Prepare Prasad using wheat flour, ghee and jaggery, and offer it to Lord Shiva. Distribute the blessed Prasad among devotees and then respectfully partake of it yourself.”
They continued, “Observe the Vrat and worship in this manner for sixteen consecutive Mondays. On the seventeenth Monday, perform a special Puja and complete the Vrat through Udyapan. Offer Churma or another preparation made from wheat flour to Lord Shiva and distribute the Prasad among family members and devotees.”
“When this Vrat is observed with faith, discipline and devotion, Lord Shiva removes the suffering of His devotees and fulfils their righteous wishes.”
After explaining the sacred procedure, the celestial maidens returned to the heavenly realm. The priest began observing the Solah Somvar Vrat exactly as they had instructed.
Every Monday, he worshipped Lord Shiva with sincere devotion, listened to the sacred Katha and distributed Prasad. After completing sixteen Mondays, he performed the Udyapan properly on the seventeenth Monday.
By the divine grace of Lord Shiva, the priest was completely freed from his disease. His body became healthy once again, and he resumed his service and daily worship in the temple of Lord Shiva.
Goddess Parvati Observes the Solah Somvar Vrat
After some time, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati once again visited the same temple. Goddess Parvati was greatly surprised when She saw that the priest had completely recovered.
She asked him, “O Brahmin, you were afflicted with a severe disease because of My curse. How were you freed from such a painful condition?”
The priest respectfully bowed before Goddess Parvati and explained the complete procedure and spiritual significance of the Solah Somvar Vrat.
After hearing about the greatness of the Vrat, Goddess Parvati was deeply pleased. At that time, Her son, Lord Kartikeya, had become displeased with Her for some reason and had gone away.
With the sincere wish of being reunited with Her son, Goddess Parvati observed the Solah Somvar Vrat. Through the spiritual merit of the Vrat and the grace of Lord Shiva, Lord Kartikeya’s heart changed. He returned to Goddess Parvati and once again began serving and honouring Her with devotion.
Lord Kartikeya asked, “O Mother, what sacred practice did You perform that changed my heart and brought me back to Your presence?”
Goddess Parvati explained the complete method and significance of the Solah Somvar Vrat. Lord Kartikeya was greatly pleased after hearing about the sacred observance.
Lord Kartikeya Is Reunited with His Friend
Lord Kartikeya had a dear Brahmin friend who had been separated from Him for a long time. Desiring to meet His beloved friend again, Lord Kartikeya also observed the Solah Somvar Vrat.
After the completion of the Vrat, His friend safely returned to Him. Surprised by this unexpected reunion, the friend asked, “O Kartikeya, what sacred deed or spiritual practice caused me to return to You?”
Lord Kartikeya explained the greatness of the Solah Somvar Vrat and told him that Lord Shiva fulfils the righteous wishes of devotees who observe this Vrat with faith and discipline.
The Brahmin Youth Marries a Princess
Lord Kartikeya’s Brahmin friend wished to be married. After learning about the greatness of the Solah Somvar Vrat, he resolved to observe it with devotion.
He worshipped Lord Shiva faithfully for sixteen consecutive Mondays and performed the Udyapan on the seventeenth Monday.
After some time, the Brahmin youth travelled to another kingdom. The king of that land had organised a Swayamvara for the marriage of his daughter. Kings and princes from many different regions had gathered for the ceremony.
The king had declared that the princess would marry the man upon whose neck the royal elephant placed the wedding garland. The Brahmin youth also sat quietly in one corner to witness the Swayamvara.
Carrying the garland, the elephant moved through the assembly and passed many kings and princes. However, it did not place the garland around any of them.
Finally, the elephant approached the Brahmin youth and placed the garland around his neck. Honouring his promise, the king arranged the marriage of his daughter with the Brahmin youth according to the sacred rites.
After their marriage, the couple began living together with happiness, love and mutual respect.
One day, the princess asked her husband, “O Lord, what virtuous deed did you perform that caused the royal elephant to overlook so many kings and princes and place the wedding garland around your neck?”
The Brahmin youth replied, “O beloved, after hearing about the greatness of the Solah Somvar Vrat from Lord Kartikeya, I observed it with complete devotion. It is only by the grace of Lord Shiva that you became my wife.”
The Princess Is Blessed with a Son
After hearing about the greatness of the Solah Somvar Vrat, the princess also began observing it with the desire to be blessed with a child.
For sixteen consecutive Mondays, she worshipped Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with discipline and devotion. By the grace of Lord Shiva, she was eventually blessed with a beautiful, radiant, intelligent and virtuous son.
When the child grew older, he asked his mother, “O Mother, what sacred deed or Vrat did you perform that allowed me to be born as your son?”
His mother narrated the Solah Somvar Vrat Katha and explained its greatness. After learning about the sacred Vrat, the young man decided to observe it with the desire to receive an opportunity to serve a kingdom and its people.
The Brahmin’s Son Receives a Kingdom
At that time, the ruler of a nearby kingdom was searching for a suitable husband for his daughter. The king had no son of his own.
The king’s ministers and servants spoke highly of the Brahmin youth’s wisdom, virtues and noble character. The king considered him a worthy match for his daughter and arranged their marriage according to the sacred traditions.
After some time, the king passed away. Since he had no son, the Brahmin youth inherited the throne. He began governing the kingdom according to Dharma, justice and compassion.
Even after receiving royal authority, he did not abandon the worship of Lord Shiva or the sacred Monday fast. Every year, he and his wife observed the Solah Somvar Vrat with devotion.
The Queen Neglects the Worship of Lord Shiva
One year, after completing sixteen Mondays, the king organised a special Puja and Udyapan on the seventeenth Monday.
He said to his wife, “Today, please bring the worship materials yourself, accompany me to the temple of Lord Shiva and participate sincerely in the sacred Puja.”
However, the queen did not honour the king’s request. Instead of going personally to the temple, she sent the worship materials through her attendants.
The king went alone to the temple and completed the worship and Udyapan of Lord Shiva.
When the Puja was completed, a divine voice was heard from the heavens:
“O King, your wife has shown disrespect towards the worship of Lord Shiva. Send her away from the palace, otherwise your kingdom and family may face great difficulties.”
The king was deeply saddened and astonished by the divine command. He explained the entire matter to his ministers and members of the royal court.
They replied, “O King, it does not seem appropriate to abandon the queen through whose good fortune you received this kingdom.”
Nevertheless, believing the command to be the will of Lord Shiva, the king sent the queen away from the palace with a heavy heart.
The Queen Faces Many Difficulties
After being expelled from the palace, the queen wandered through unfamiliar places, hungry and thirsty. Eventually, she reached another town.
There, she saw an elderly woman carrying a bundle of thread to the marketplace. Seeing the queen’s miserable condition, the woman said, “Daughter, help me carry this bundle, and I will give you some food.”
The queen placed the bundle of thread upon her head. They had travelled only a short distance when a powerful wind suddenly arose and scattered the entire bundle.
Believing the queen to be unfortunate, the elderly woman scolded her and sent her away.
The queen then reached the home of an oil merchant. As soon as she entered, several vessels filled with oil broke, and all the oil spilled upon the ground. The merchant also considered her inauspicious and drove her away.
Overcome by hunger and thirst, the queen reached a river. However, as soon as she approached it, the water of the river dried up.
She then went to a nearby pond. The moment she touched the water, insects appeared in it, and the water became impure. Yet because her thirst had become unbearable, she drank the same water.
Exhausted, the queen sat beneath a flourishing green tree to rest. As soon as she sat there, the leaves began falling, and the tree started to wither.
Whichever tree she approached began losing its greenery. The local people witnessed these unusual events and took the queen to a compassionate temple priest.
A Compassionate Priest Gives Shelter to the Queen
Seeing the queen’s sorrowful condition, the priest said, “Daughter, you appear to belong to a noble family and seem to have reached this place because of a great misfortune. Stay in my Ashram as though you were my own daughter. You need not worry about anything here.”
The queen began living in the Ashram. However, signs of her misfortune appeared there as well. Whenever she prepared food, insects appeared in it. Whenever she brought water, it became impure.
The priest was greatly surprised and asked, “Daughter, what offence did you commit that has caused you to suffer so many difficulties?”
With tears in her eyes, the queen replied, “My husband asked me to personally attend the special worship performed on the seventeenth Monday. I did not obey his request and sent the worship materials through my attendants instead.”
“Because I neglected the worship of Lord Shiva, I was expelled from the palace. Since that day, one misfortune after another has followed me.”
The priest meditated upon Lord Shiva and said, “Daughter, sincerely accept your mistake and observe the Solah Somvar Vrat with faith and humility. Lord Shiva is infinitely compassionate and loving towards His devotees. He will forgive your offence and remove your suffering.”
The Queen Observes the Solah Somvar Vrat
Following the guidance of the priest, the queen began observing the Solah Somvar Vrat.
Every Monday, she bathed, wore clean clothes, worshipped Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, listened to the sacred Katha and humbly asked forgiveness for her mistake.
After completing sixteen Mondays, she performed the Udyapan with devotion on the seventeenth Monday.
By the grace of Lord Shiva, her misfortunes gradually disappeared. The food prepared in the Ashram and the water she brought remained pure once again.
At the same time, the king suddenly remembered his wife. He deeply regretted sending her away and ordered his servants to search throughout the kingdom and surrounding regions.
During their search, the servants reached the priest’s Ashram and recognised the queen.
They said to the priest, “She is the wife of our king. Please permit us to take her back to the royal palace.”
The priest replied, “Tell your king that if he truly wishes to take his wife back with dignity and honour, he must personally come here and receive her.”
The Reunion of the King and Queen
The servants returned and narrated the entire matter to the king. The king personally travelled to the priest’s Ashram.
With humility, he said, “O revered one, she is my wife. Believing it to be the command of Lord Shiva, I sent her away. Now, by the grace of Mahadeva, I have remembered her and have come to take her back with honour. Please grant her permission to return with me.”
The priest blessed the queen and allowed her to return with the king.
The king respectfully brought his wife back to the royal palace. Upon their arrival, the people decorated the entire city, sang auspicious songs and welcomed them with great joy.
From that day onward, the king and queen worshipped Lord Shiva with faith, humility and discipline. Every year, they observed the Solah Somvar Vrat, served those in need and distributed food and charitable offerings.
By the divine grace of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, they lived a peaceful, righteous and prosperous life.

The sacred Solah Somvar Vrat Katha explains the importance of devotion to Lord Shiva, disciplined spiritual practice, humility and the sincere fulfilment of one’s sacred resolve.
Throughout the story, the priest, Goddess Parvati, Lord Kartikeya, the Brahmin youth, the princess and the queen all seek refuge in Lord Shiva under different circumstances and for different righteous wishes.
The central message of the story is that a Vrat is not merely a means of fulfilling worldly desires. It is also a spiritual practice of self-discipline, repentance, service and surrender to the Divine.
Human beings may make mistakes, but when a person sincerely accepts their mistake and returns to the path of Dharma and devotion, positive transformation may take place in their life.
