Let us immerse ourselves in the sacred narrative of Rama Ekadashi, a tale that reveals the profound glories of devotion and the unwavering grace of Bhagwan Vishnu. As recounted in the sacred Puranas, this story was lovingly shared by Shri Krishna with Arjuna, illuminating the path of Dharma and the immense spiritual benefits of observing this holy Vrat.
The Sacred Katha of King Muchukunda, Shobhan, and Princess Chandrabhaga
Arjuna humbly inquired: “O Madhava! Please graciously elaborate on the name, the presiding Deity, and the profound benefits of the Ekadashi that falls during the Krishna Paksha of the Kartik month. Which sacred Ekadashi is this, and what blessings does one receive by observing its Vrat?”
Shri Krishna replied: “O Dhananjaya! The Ekadashi that comes in the Krishna Paksha of Kartik is known as ‘Rama Ekadashi’. This sacred Vrat has the power to absolve all sins and bestow lasting joy upon the devotees of Bhagwan Vishnu. Now, listen with rapt attention to its divine Katha.”
In ancient times, there reigned a virtuous and righteous king named Muchukunda. His conduct was so gentle and sweet that even the Devas—Indra, Varuna, Kubera—and even the noble Vibhishan, held him in deep affection. The king himself was devoted to truth and was a steadfast Bhagwan Vishnu devotee. In his kingdom, the observance of Ekadashi was extremely strict; no one dared to transgress this sacred rule.
The king had a cultured and virtuous daughter named Chandrabhaga. He had arranged her marriage to Shobhan, the son of King Chandrasen. On one occasion, Shobhan was visiting his in-laws’ home. It was during the auspicious Kartik month, and it was then that the greatly meritorious Rama Ekadashi arrived.
In King Muchukunda’s kingdom, the observance of Ekadashi was so profound that not only humans but even animals, birds, horses, and elephants abstained from food on that day. This deeply worried Chandrabhaga. She thought, “My beloved husband’s body is delicate; how will he manage to observe the Ekadashi fast? And my father’s decree here is absolute; no one can transgress it.”
The king had a proclamation made throughout the kingdom: “Everyone shall observe this Ekadashi, for our dear son-in-law is also present in our city.” Hearing this, Shobhan turned to his wife and said:
“My dearest Chandrabhaga! My delicate body may not be able to endure a full fast. If I abstain from food and water for the entire day, I fear my life might even depart. Please tell me, is there any way out?”
Chandrabhaga replied: “O my dear husband! In my father’s kingdom, no one partakes of food on Ekadashi—neither human beings nor even animals. If you remain here, you will certainly have to observe the Vrat. If you feel you cannot, then perhaps it would be best to go to another place.”
Shobhan pondered for a moment and then spoke:
“Your words are true, my beloved, but I shall not leave this place. I too shall observe the Ekadashi Vrat; whatever is destined to happen, will happen.”
Thus, when Rama Ekadashi arrived, Shobhan also joined everyone in observing the sacred Vrat. Throughout the day, he was grievously afflicted by intense hunger and thirst. As evening descended, and the time for the night vigil arrived, that night proved to be exceedingly arduous for him.
The very next day, even before the break of dawn, Shobhan’s life force departed due to the severe pangs of hunger and thirst. King Muchukunda arranged for his cremation and then spoke to his daughter:
“My dear daughter! Do not commit Sati. The grace of Bhagwan Vishnu is boundless; place your unwavering faith in Him and never abandon the sacred observance of Ekadashi.”
Following her father’s loving command, Chandrabhaga remained in the kingdom, continuously observing the Ekadashi Vrat with steadfast devotion.
Shobhan Attains a Divine Celestial Realm
Meanwhile, such was the profound effect of Rama Ekadashi that Shobhan received the divine grace of Bhagwan Vishnu. He was granted a magnificent, prosperous, and enemy-free celestial city named “Devpur,” situated near the sacred Mandrachal mountain. This divine realm was adorned with precious gems, boasted golden pillars, and was graced by the presence of Gandharvas and Apsaras. Shobhan began to reign there with great splendor, living as if he were another Indra himself.
Around that time, a Brahmin named Somasharma from King Muchukunda’s kingdom, while on a sacred pilgrimage, happened to arrive at this very divine city. Upon seeing Shobhan, he immediately recognized him and was filled with utter astonishment. Shobhan, too, seeing the Brahmin, rose respectfully and offered his salutations, immediately inquiring about the well-being of his beloved wife Chandrabhaga and his father-in-law, King Muchukunda.
Somasharma replied: “O King! Your father-in-law, King Muchukunda, is well, and your virtuous wife, Chandrabhaga, is also safe and sound. However, you had departed from your mortal coil there, having succumbed during the Rama Ekadashi fast—how then did you come to attain this magnificent divine city?”
Shobhan said: “O best among Brahmins! All this is the benefit of the Vrat of Kartik Krishna Rama Ekadashi. By its effect, I have received this wonderful divine city; however, there is one thing — this city is not yet stable.”
The Brahmin asked: “Why is it unstable, and how can it be made stable?”
Shobhan explained: “I did not observe that Vrat with deep love, but because of the compulsion of circumstances. Therefore, I received the benefit, but not permanence. If you convey this message to my wife Chandrabhaga, then by the effect of her regular Ekadashi Vrats observed since childhood, she will make this city stable forever.”
The Power of Chandrabhaga’s Vrat
Somasharma Brahmin returned to the capital of Muchukunda and narrated the entire Katha to Chandrabhaga. At first, Chandrabhaga asked, “O revered Brahmin! Have you seen all this directly, or are you speaking only on the basis of a dream?”
The Brahmin replied, “O princess! I have seen your husband and his city with my own eyes. But that realm is unstable — if you wish, you can make it stable.”
Chandrabhaga said: “If this is so, then please take me there. By the power of my Vrat, I shall make that city firm and permanent, and I shall live with my husband.”
The Brahmin took her to the ashram of Rishi Vamadeva near Mandarachal. Vamadeva performed her Abhishek with sacred mantras. By the effect of Rama Ekadashi and Chandrabhaga’s long-observed Vrats, she received a divine body and reached Shobhan’s realm in that very form.
Seeing his righteous wife in divine form, Shobhan became extremely pleased and offered her a seat beside him. Chandrabhaga said:
“O Nath! Since childhood, from the age of only eight years, I have observed every Ekadashi with discipline and devotion. By the accumulated merit of those Vrats, this divine city of yours shall remain stable forever. Now this realm will remain firm and unshaken until the end of Pralay.”
In this way, both of them lived there in divine forms and enjoyed happiness similar to Vaikunth.
Benefits and Essence
Shri Krishna said to Arjun: “O son of the Kuru dynasty! Such is the glory of Rama Ekadashi. Whoever observes this Ekadashi Vrat has all sins destroyed. Whoever listens to its Mahatmya with devotion ultimately attains Vishnu Dham.”
Summary of the Katha: Bhagwan Shri Hari is extremely compassionate. Sometimes, even if a person observes Ekadashi out of helplessness or without full devotion, Bhagwan still grants its benefits. But one who observes it with complete faith and lifelong discipline receives a benefit that becomes lasting and beneficial for others as well. Shobhan received a divine realm, but it was Chandrabhaga’s long spiritual discipline and Ekadashi Vrats that gave it stability. Such a dharmic and devoted wife is also received only by the grace of Shri Hari.
