शिव पुराण तथा अन्य पौराणिक ग्रंथों में वर्णन मिलता है कि एक समय भगवान ब्रह्मा और भगवान विष्णु के मध्य यह विवाद उत्पन्न हुआ कि दोनों में श्रेष्ठ कौन है। दोनों अपने-अपने कार्यों का महत्व बताकर स्वयं को सर्वोच्च सिद्ध करना चाहते थे। इस विवाद का समाधान खोजने के लिए देवता, ऋषि और मुनि भगवान शिव के पास पहुँचे।
देवताओं और ऋषियों ने भगवान शिव को त्रिदेवों में सर्वोच्च बताया। किंतु भगवान ब्रह्मा इस निर्णय से संतुष्ट नहीं हुए। कहा जाता है कि उन्होंने अपने पाँचवें मुख से भगवान शिव के प्रति अपमानजनक वचन कहे और अपने अहंकार का प्रदर्शन किया।
भगवान शिव ने देखा कि अहंकार और असत्य धर्म के मार्ग में बाधा बन रहे हैं। तब उनके ललाट से एक दिव्य, तेजस्वी और रौद्र स्वरूप प्रकट हुआ। यही भगवान कालभैरव थे। उनके हाथों में त्रिशूल, खड्ग और अन्य दिव्य अस्त्र-शस्त्र थे तथा उनका स्वरूप अत्यंत तेजस्वी और भय का नाश करने वाला था।
भगवान शिव ने कालभैरव को धर्म की रक्षा करने और ब्रह्मा के अहंकार का अंत करने का आदेश दिया। भगवान कालभैरव ने भगवान ब्रह्मा के पाँचवें मुख को अपने नखाग्र से अलग कर दिया। यह घटना अहंकार के विनाश और धर्म की स्थापना का प्रतीक मानी जाती है।
ब्रह्मा का पाँचवाँ सिर काटने के कारण भगवान कालभैरव को ब्रह्महत्या दोष लगा। भगवान शिव की आज्ञा से वे हाथ में ब्रह्मा का कपाल लेकर अनेक तीर्थों में भ्रमण करते रहे। जहाँ-जहाँ वे गए, वहाँ उन्होंने धर्म, न्याय और सत्य का संदेश दिया, लेकिन ब्रह्महत्या दोष उनका पीछा नहीं छोड़ रहा था।
अंततः भगवान कालभैरव काशी नगरी पहुँचे। धार्मिक मान्यता है कि काशी में प्रवेश करते ही ब्रह्महत्या दोष समाप्त हो गया और ब्रह्मा का कपाल उनके हाथ से पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ा। जिस स्थान पर यह घटना हुई, वह आगे चलकर ‘कपाल मोचन’ तीर्थ के रूप में प्रसिद्ध हुआ।
भगवान शिव ने भगवान कालभैरव को काशी का कोतवाल नियुक्त किया और कहा कि जो भी भक्त श्रद्धा के साथ तुम्हारी पूजा करेगा, उसकी रक्षा करना और उसे धर्म के मार्ग पर चलने की प्रेरणा देना। तभी से भगवान कालभैरव को काशी का रक्षक और न्याय के देवता माना जाता है।

Kalashtami Vrat Katha
According to the Shiva Purana and other ancient scriptures, once a dispute arose between Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu regarding who was superior among them. Both claimed supremacy based on their roles in creation and preservation. To resolve this dispute, the gods, sages, and rishis approached Lord Shiva.
The sages and divine beings declared Lord Shiva as the highest among the Trimurti. However, Lord Brahma was not satisfied with this decision. It is said that out of ego, he spoke disrespectfully about Lord Shiva using his fifth head.
Seeing that ego and false pride were obstructing dharma, a fierce and radiant form emerged from the forehead of Lord Shiva. This form was Lord Kaal Bhairav, holding divine weapons such as a trident and sword, radiating immense energy and fearlessness.
Lord Shiva instructed Kaal Bhairav to uphold dharma and remove Brahma’s ego. Following this divine command, Lord Kaal Bhairav severed Brahma’s fifth head with the tip of his nails. This act symbolizes the destruction of ego and the establishment of righteousness.
Due to the act of cutting Brahma’s head, Lord Kaal Bhairav became afflicted with the sin of Brahmahatya. As instructed by Lord Shiva, he wandered across many sacred places holding Brahma’s skull in his hand. Wherever he went, he spread the message of truth, justice, and dharma, but the sin did not leave him.
