Let us immerse ourselves in the divine glory of Maa Annapurna, the benevolent Mother who nourishes the entire universe. This sacred hymn, a heartfelt prayer, extols Her infinite compassion, divine forms, and the profound benefits of Her devotion, recounting also the sublime narrative of Devi Parvati’s unwavering resolve to unite with Lord Shiva.
O Maa Annapurna, placing the dust of the lotus feet of Vishweshwar (Lord Shiva) upon my head, I, your humble devotee, with my intellect, endeavour to describe Your wondrous glory.
O Mother, You are the bestower of eternal joy, renowned for granting boons and dispelling all fears. Victory to You!
You are an ocean of beauty, the Divine Mother of the universe, who eradicates all sins and removes the fear of worldly existence. With a radiant white countenance, adorned in pure white garments, Your sacred feet are worshipped by devoted saints and revered sages.
O Mother, the sovereign ruler of Kashi, Maheshwari, the true savior of the entire world. Seated upon a bull, known by the name Rudrani, You traverse the universe. Victory to You, O Kalyani!
O Kalyani, the crest-jewel among chaste and devoted wives, O Daughter of the Mountain (Parvati), You attained this supreme status. Unable to bear the sorrow of separation from Your Divine Consort (Lord Shiva, after Sati’s self-immolation), Your sacred body was consumed by the fire of yoga.
Even while leaving that physical form, Your profound love for Lord Shiva’s feet remained, and You were reborn in the revered home of Himagiri (the Himalayas). You manifested as Girija, and immense joy filled the entire household.
Then, Narada Muni came to You and guided You, instructing You on the path to attain Your desired marriage. He recounted the glories of Brahma, Varuna, Kubera, and Devraj (Indra), and other celestial beings.
He praised all the deities, intending to sway Your mind. But O blessed Daughter of Himachal, You remained unwavering in Your sacred vow, thus proving Your supreme determination.
Seeing Your steadfastness, Narada then became concerned for Your well-being and taught You the Mantra to fulfill Your vow. He instructed You to perform rigorous penance, and You recognized the truth in the words of the saint.
Hearing the celestial voice (Gagangarira), which could not be disregarded, Lord Brahma then came to Your presence. He said, “O Daughter, ask for an unparalleled boon; I will surely grant it today according to Your divine desire.”
“You have performed extraordinary penance, O most delicate one, enduring great hardships. Now, cast aside any doubt about me; I swear there is no deceit from my side.”
“Know that I am Brahma, the knower of the Vedas; consider my words to be absolutely true. Without hesitation, speak Your sacred wish; I will grant You whatever boon You desire.”
Hearing Lord Brahma’s sweet words, Devi Bhavani smiled gently. She said, “O Creator, what are You saying? You are indeed the creator and sustainer of the entire world.”
“My deepest desire is not hidden from You; what do You wish me to articulate? At the time of my demise in Daksha’s yajna, I wished that Shambhunath (Lord Shiva) would again be my beloved husband.”
“May He now be united with me as I deeply desire.” Lord Brahma said “Tathastu” (So be it) and departed to his divine abode. Thus, Girija (Parvati) was united with Shankar (Shiva), and the doubt regarding the fulfillment of her desire was completely dispelled.
The radiant light of a crore moons and a crore suns resides upon Your divine countenance. A rosary, a sacred book, an ankus (elephant goad) adorn Your hands, and another captivating noose (paash) enchants the mind, O Maa Annapurna.
O Ever-Complete One, Unborn, Flawless, Infinitely Full! O Mother, an ocean of boundless compassion, bestower of welfare, filled with divine glory and overflowing joy.
With lotus-like eyes and a radiant forehead, O Devi Kalika, O fierce Chandi! You are Girija residing in Kailash, and You rejoice in bliss with Sindhuja (Lakshmi, born from the ocean).
You are known as Mahalakshmi in Swarga (heaven), and You are revered as Lakshmi in the mortal world. You manifest in all forms everywhere, and the kings of Amarapur (heavenly realms) humbly serve You.
Those who devoutly recite this Your sacred Chalisa will certainly attain auspicious fruits, with Lord Shiva as the divine witness. The person who, with a focused mind, recites it with abundant devotion in the morning…
…will attain astonishing supreme prosperity, along with their beloved wife, husband, friends, and children. You grant kingdom to those who have lost it, and Your devotees experience an increase in their good fame.
This sacred recitation bestows great joy and auspiciousness, and the devotee obtains all their desired treasures. Those who beautifully recite this Chalisa and humbly bow their heads will have all their tasks accomplished, with Kashi’s Lord (Vishwanath Shiva) as the eternal witness.
